CJ Gardner-Johnson Returns, Giving The Eagles A Much Needed Safety
CJ Gardner-Johnson is coming back to Philly. He took a year detour in Detroit and made a few enemies among the Philly fanbase while doing so. But now that he has returned to Philly on a 3-year $33 million deal, you’d imagine that all will be forgiven. Tom Pelissero from the NFL Network was the first to report the move.
The Eagles first acquired CJ Gardner-Johnson in 2022 via a trade just before the regular season began. They sent the Saints a 5th and 6th round pick to acquire Gardner-Johnson, who was going into the final year of his contract. He went on to lead the team, and the league, with 6 interceptions. That despite him missing time.
But when he went to free agency, the two sides could not come to an agreement. There was an apparent mixup between the Eagles and Gardner-Johnson’s agent at the time. The Eagles eventually moved on to bringing back James Bradberry instead, and the offer the Eagles originally made disappeared. He wound up settling for a 1-year deal with the Lions, and the Eagles never adequately replaced him.
The season did not exactly go well for CJ either. He went down early in the season with a torn pec, playing in only 3 regular season games. He returned in time for the playoffs and hauled in one interception across the 3 games. But in his absence, the Lions backup Safety stepped in, eliminating the Lions’ need to resign him this off-season. Which works out for the Eagles, because it led to a reunion.
The move helps fill the Eagles’ biggest need. The Safeties who replaced CJ Gardner Johnson and Marcus Epps did not do a good job. They already cut Kevin Byard. Sydney Brown will miss the start of the season. Reed Blankenship was a major disappointment in year two. They badly needed better talent at the position. They now have at least one safety they know they can trust. But it may be wise to come away with at least one more.
