Playoff Experience Would Only Help the Flyers Rebuild
A five-game winning streak, a five-game losing streak, and now a three-game winning streak. These are the trials and tribulations of a young Philadelphia Flyers team trying to find themselves in the middle of a playoff race and a simultaneous rebuild.
Happily, they are finding themselves a year or two ahead of schedule. Raise your hand if you thought the Flyers would be seven points up on a playoff berth on Super Bowl Sunday. I know that I never expected this. It does cause a few complications that might change the franchise trajectory, positively and negatively.
Draft Positioning
The Flyers currently hold their own pick in the 1st round, which is 19th, and the 1st round pick from the Florida Panthers, which is 28th. Even the most optimistic of Flyers fans expected their own pick to land somewhere in the lottery.
It quite possibly still could, but every regular-season win pushes them back in the talent acquisition order. I’d rather see my team win than lose on purpose. I also would rather see the talent I have in a rebuild surprise than disappoint.
The NHL Trade Deadline
They currently have two 1st-round picks and none in the second round. That could all change if Danny Briere decides to deal some of his veteran talent at the deadline. Having worked for two NHL franchises and being around those players on a daily basis during deadline time, it always makes the locker room anxious.
If you’re having a great year, nobody wants to leave. If you’re having a bad year, everyone feels they could be moved. This Flyers team is in the odd spot of having a great year but with a long-term plan. I’m fascinated to see what Briere does, but I assure you that attempting to sell an “asset sale” to his locker room would bring a negative reaction.
The Value of a Playoff Berth
This season looks like it’s on a path to be a huge success whether they make the tournament or not. One thing is certain, watching the talent they have face the scrutiny and pressure of March hockey will be interesting.
I heard a caller to our station last week claim the players know there is no pressure on them. That’s completely off-base. When a professional athlete has a chance to achieve, it brings pressure. The Flyers brass will see the players that thrive and those that wilt under that pressure.
No Downside of the Playoffs
Just getting in would be a huge gold star in 2024. Remember that the team that snuck in last year with the least points ending up advancing to the Stanley Cup Final. The Magic Number to make the playoffs the last five full 82 game slates was an average of 94 points. If this team makes the dance, it will only spur on the rebuild, not slow it down.
