Patriots Reporter Thinks Eagles Had Strong Interest In Bill Belichick
After the Eagles lost to the Bucs in the first round, there was a real thought that Nick Sirianni could be fired. he damaged to save his job with whatever he said to Jeff Lurie in their meeting. But it came with some caveats. For one, he is no longer in charge of the offense. And that tells you how short the leash is for him. If the Eagles do not turn things around, he could be on his way out next season. And if that is the case, they may already have eyes on one replacement. Bill Belichick.
Recently Greg Bedard from the Boston Sports Journal joined our sister station, 98.5 The Sports Hub up in Boston. They asked him about some of what he was hearing down at the Senior Bowl. And one of his Patriots takeaways has a lot to do with the Eagles. Because he was hearing a lot about Bill Belichick, and how he could still be connected to the Eagles.
“Probably the most interesting thing that I have heard… is that the Eagles were very interested in Bill Belichick if things didn’t work out with Nick Sirianni. And they could be at the front of the line if things go poorly for them next year… Remember before the end of the season I told you that teams have already reached out to Bill. I am now pretty convinced the Eagles were (one of them). I wouldn’t be surprised, given the relationship that Howie and Bill have, that the Eagles were one of the teams to reach out to Bill”
For now, it doesn’t mean too much. Nick Sirianni will be the head coach next season. And if this new system with Kellen Moore running the offense works out, he will keep his job. But the very fact reporters are suggesting they have eyes for Bill Belichick is not exactly a ringing endorsement for Sirianni.
If you are dating someone, but they keep another person in their contacts as a fallback plan, you would not exactly feel confident in your relationship. Likewise, if Jeff Lurie has Bill on speed dial, how can Nick Sirianni feel good about his place with the Eagles?
