An Overlooked Philadelphia Eagles Offseason Storyline
The coaching shuffle has become the biggest offseason focus for the Philadelphia Eagles. Personnel questions might’ve taken a backseat temporarily, but you should soon hear about a potential contract adjustment for Haason Reddick.
The former Temple University standout exceeded all expectations with a career-best season in 2022, and he followed it up with another strong effort in 2023. He’ll now enter what is essentially the final season of his a three-year, $45 million contract signed in March 2022.
Haason Reddick
A potential contract dispute became a topic of speculative conversation during training camp in 2023. Reddick admirably took the high road from any public drama when answering an open-ended question from Jeff McLane.
“Y’all know what’s going on… I’m just worried about being the best version of myself, and I’ll let everything else sort itself out, truly.” -Haason Reddick (August 2023)
McLane spoke on The John Kincade Show’s First Friday broadcast about Reddick’s point of view.
“He just got done going through how he’s a top five guy (edge rusher). He kind of feels disrespected because last year he wasn’t in the conversation in some people’s minds in terms of defensive player of the year.” -Jeff McLane
He also acknowledged the harsh reality of NFL players at high risk for long-term injuries playing on non-guaranteed contracts. The league has also limited the players’ leverage in contract negotiations with significant increases in fines for holdouts.
The two-time Pro Bowler will turn 30 early in the 2024 season. If he felt disrespected before the 2023 season began, Reddick will undoubtedly pursue a contract extension this offseason.
Eagles Need Reddick in 2024
Reddick finished tied for second in the NFL with 16 sacks in 2022. His five forced fumbles brought an additional element to a defense that helped the Eagles to an appearance in Super Bowl LVII. While he regressed in both categories in 2023, he posted comparable numbers in quarterback pressures and tackles for loss.
He also didn’t benefit from midseason changes on the defensive coaching staff. Matt Patricia utilized Reddick in coverage relatively often, which was an element that stunted the former 1st-round pick’s development in four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
McLane spoke on his podcast about how some Eagles reacted poorly after Jalen Hurts received a long-term extension last offseason. The dynamic certainly didn’t help them during their late-season tailspin.
“The trickle-down effect of Hurts’ contract extension and other big-money deals (Howie) Roseman has given certain players has indirectly affected individual performance. Some players with expiring contracts or expanding deals might be incentivized to chase numbers at the expense of team success.” –Jeff McLane
Analysis of the situation must fairly include that McLane’s second statement didn’t specifically point to Reddick or any other individual. However, Reddick did show understandable (and not reckless) frustration with the defense’s failure on the sidelines on Christmas Day against the New York Giants.
The organization must recognize their best pass rusher’s viewpoint as one of their top offseason priorities. Don’t expect Haason Reddick to play for the Eagles in 2024 with the same contract structure. Will both parties handle the situation carefully and properly?
