5 Things the NFL Conference Championship Games Told Me About the Eagles
Watching the NFL Conference Championship Games was depressing. The first thing that I thought on our rainy Sunday morning was that it would have been a terrible day for 69,000 people to sit in the puddles at Lincoln Financial Field.
Nobody would’ve cared I’m sure, but the rain seemed like tears to me of a season that might have been. All day long, the only thing I could imagine while watching the AFC and NFC Championship Games was how these evolving stories related to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Super Bowl “Hangover” Nonsense
So the Super Bowl champions didn’t have a hangover, but the runner-up Eagles did? Can we finally put that idiotic excuse to rest?
The Chiefs and 49ers both figured out how to stop the bleeding.
The San Francisco 49ers ended October on a three-game losing streak and suffered a humiliating home defeat to the eventual AFC top seed Baltimore Ravens on Christmas night. When they could have headed south, they instead regrouped and turned their season around.
The Kansas City Chiefs started out 6-1 and then slid to 9-6. The slide included four home losses and a disastrous Christmas game against the Las Vegas Raiders. They put it all together and managed to win five in a row. They are heading to the Super Bowl. The Eagles couldn’t do what the two teams who won NFL Conference Championship Games managed to do.
Kyle Shanahan and Steve Wilks made the proper adjustments, unlike the Eagles coaches
The 49ers looked dead in the water at halftime of the NFC Championship Game. They could have folded like the Eagles did against the Buccaneers. Instead, the 49ers adjusted on both sides of the ball to stifle the Detroit Lions offense. The defense came out of their traditional zone approach. The adjustments have them heading to Sin City.
Style does not win over substance and speeches.
Dan Campbell seems like a great guy and a fantastic motivator. If Disney Channel was casting an NFL Coach for a movie, he would be the perfect candidate to play the part.
Everything about Campbell plays to a brand. He wants to be the baddest, boldest, and most aggressive team in the league. That worked for him until he went up against a master strategist who adjusted in the second half on Sunday.
His desire to keep going for it on fourth down cost them. It’s great to have an image but even better to do the smart things to win.
The Eagles have to feel like they aren’t far away.
The Chiefs are in the Super Bowl, and the Eagles beat them in their stadium. The Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins in the playoffs, and the Birds also beat both those teams during the regular season.
No matter how bad the collapse was down the stretch, the Eagles didn’t get to 10-1 just by luck. If they can heal the scars of the late season malaise, it affords some positive building blocks for 2024.
