3 Vital Tips For After A Snowstorm In The Delaware Valley
If we are due to get a snowstorm in the Delaware Valley, you must know these three things. They are important to the safety of you and others.
3 Vital Tips
1. You have 6 hours to remove snow from sidewalks.
According to the city of Philadelphia’s website, you have 6 hours to shovel snow obstructing sidewalks. Clear a path at least 36 inches wide on your sidewalk. Do not shovel or sweep the snow into the street. It is also important to clear snow from neighborhood sewer drains to allow melting snow to drain.
The penalty for an uncleared sidewalk is a minimum of $50, but up to $300 for each violation.
The same goes for other cities in the area. Check your local municipality’s website for specific details.
2. You must remove snow and ice from the top of your car before driving.
Don’t be this guy. There is a statute in the state of Pennsylvania that requires drivers to “make reasonable efforts to remove accumulated ice or snow from the motor vehicle or motor carrier vehicle, including the hood, trunk, and roof of the motor vehicle or motor carrier vehicle, within 24 hours after the cessation of the falling snow or ice.” New Jersey has their own version of this statute.
Delaware does not have a written law to remove snow from cars. But understand that snow sliding or falling off of cars going at a high rate of speed poses a serious risk to surrounding motorists.
3. Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
This is likely not the first thing you’d think of after a storm. You need to check your in-home detectors. It is especially important if you don’t have power and need to heat your home using a fireplace, space heater, or generator. Check the batteries in the detectors and change them if they’re not working well.
A Few Other Things To Note
- Make sure you have batteries in your flashlights in case of a power outage.
- Make sure your gas tank is full in your car.
- If the road looks wet, it is likely ice, so slow down! Avoid driving right away.
- Check on your elderly neighbors. See if they need help shoveling.
Keep these things in mind for your safety after a snowstorm in the Delaware Valley.
