Are the Eagles the Least-Accomplished Team in the NFC Playoffs?
There will be many different explanations or excuses offered from the NovaCare Complex for the Philadelphia Eagles’ late-season collapse. The truth is that the statistical numbers on offense and defense tell the tale of a team we should have seen coming. Could the Eagles actually be the least accomplished team in the NFC Playoffs? Let’s review.
2023 STATS
The teams are listed as they are seeded going into Week 18 of the season. These current offensive and defensive rankings are listed next to them in points scored and points allowed.
OFFENSIVE PPG
- 49ers (4th)
- Cowboys (3rd)
- Lions (5th)
- Buccaneers (19th)
- Eagles (7th)
- Rams (8th)
- Packers (11th)
The Eagles are currently 7th in the NFL in points scored per game. It’s slippage from 2022 but most certainly respectable. Facing the toughest NFL schedule could be part of the explanation. Three of their NFC peers are scoring at a better clip. The Dallas Cowboys, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Detroit Lions all reside in the top five.
DEFENSIVE PPG
- 49ers (2nd)
- Cowboys (5th)
- Lions (23rd)
- Buccaneers (10th)
- Eagles (29th) – WORST IN NFC PLAYOFFS
- Rams (19th)
- Packers (14th)
The Eagles have cratered defensively. Only the 49ers and Cowboys reside in the top five in points allowed per game. They are the only two NFC teams to be top five in both categories. The surprising Buccaneers, who might be the Wild Card round opponent, manage to come in at 10th. Only three teams in the NFL have given up more points per game than the Eagles. It’s a monumental failure by the players and the coaching staff.
COMBINED RANKINGS
- 49ers (6)
- Cowboys (8)
- Packers (25)
- Rams (27)
- Lions (28)
- Buccaneers (29)
- Eagles (36)
When you combine the offensive and defensive rankings I’ve re-stacked the current NFC Playoff teams. The 49ers and Cowboys are clearly the cream of the crop.
I was shocked to see the Packers coming in at third in the combined rankings. They have been struggling all season, but they clearly have reason for optimism that they can pull off an upset.
The Lions defense makes them drop behind both the Packers and the Rams. Their combined 28 puts them way behind both the 49ers and Cowboys.
The Eagles are far behind, and it’s not even close. The only silver lining is that the Buccaneers are almost as bad in the combined rankings. If Philly is the fifth seed, they will travel to face Tampa to face a team that is statistically 6th in the NFC Playoff field. That means Dallas and Detroit will both face more difficult Wild Card round opponents.
