Eagles Sneak By Chiefs In Super Bowl LVII Rematch
Monday Night Football looked like a waste of time. The overhyped Super Bowl LVII rematch was turning into another painful loss for the Philadelphia Eagles at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs hit the self-destruct button with a key fumble from Travis Kelce (and Taylor Swift nowhere to be found) and repeated key drops in game-changing situations. The Eagles poetically erased a 10-point halftime deficit at Arrowhead Stadium to improve to 9-1.
Chiefs Take 17-7 Lead
The Eagles have built their success on the strength of their offensive and defensive lines. Andy Reid, their former coach who introduced the roster-building approach, drew up a game plan to counter it. Chris Jones dominated a frustrated offensive line anchored by Jason Kelce.
The Chiefs gashed the top run defense in the NFL. Their interior offensive line ripped holes open for Isiah Pacheco to lead the rushing attack to 167 yards.
They held Jalen Hurts to 69 yards passing with under nine minutes left to play. The lead somehow didn’t hold up.
Eagles Stun Chiefs in Super Bowl Rematch
Already in a 10-point hole, the Eagles faced a third-and-1 at their own 48. They converted on their first third down of the evening thanks to the infamous Tush Push to turn the momentum. D’Andre Swift ignited the comeback with a 35-yard jet sweep on the next play. Hurts got the Eagles back in the game with a rushing touchdown on an unexpected quarterback draw.
DeVonta Smith took over during an eight-play drive for 80 yards in the fourth quarter. His 41-yard reception set up the Eagles for a Tush Push score, which proved to be the game-winning touchdown.
The defense somehow turned away Patrick Mahomes and the high-powered Chiefs offense on all six of their possessions during the second half. The defending Super Bowl champs have struggled to put points on the board despite the reigning Super Bowl MVP under center. Their most egregious mistake of the night came from Marquez Valdes-Scantling when he dropped what could’ve been a go-ahead touchdown in the final two minutes.
Eagles fans shook their heads as time ticked away in the third quarter. Thank God they stayed awake for an unexpected victory.
