The Flyers Continue To Have Success Early On With Atkinson and Couturier
Amid their rebuild, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated Connor McDavid and the Oilers last night 4-1. However, the Flyers have been playing well in their first slate of four games; questions loom surrounding the team dynamic. In Thursday night’s contest between Edmonton and Philadelphia, Cam Atkinson scored two goals while Sean Couturier had two assists.

Leadership
Since Claude Giroux was traded, Philadelphia has yet to name a captain two seasons later. While head coach John Tortorella stated they would not be called a captain, could the question of alternate come into play? Tortorella’s praise of Atkinson after the shutout win against the Canucks sparked thoughts of the possibility. After seeing Couturier and Atkinson’s early success on ice if he would consider giving the pair letters, Tortorella replied with a stern “No.”
Even though the focus for the Flyers is to have the younger players stand out, is that a valid reason not to name two more alternate captains? Scott Laughton is the lone alternate captain this season, which will stay that way. Besides Philadelphia, there are four other teams in the NHL without a captain: Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks, and Seattle Kraken. All those teams have multiple alternate captains. Leadership for the younger players is essential. Tortorella tends to stand by what he says. Despite how the two have played, it is doubtful that they will get a leadership role.
Frost Healthy Scratched
In the first pair of home games, forward Morgan Frost was absent. The 24-year-old center was a healthy scratch. Frost didn’t accumulate any points in the season’s first two games but held his own on the ice. This shouldn’t be a huge concern as it’s still early in the season, but with players like Bobby Brink and Tyson Foerster starting over Frost, it seems doubtful. Frost was disappointed about the decisions, but he knows he needs to remain positive, so he is ready to return to the lineup when he is needed.
Finally, the Flyers had two big home wins, which is drawing the fans back in. Cheers began to flood the Wells Fargo Center as the final buzzer went off.
