How Zack Wheeler Has Pitched vs the Miami Marlins Lineup
We already took a look at how the Phillies have hit against the Marlins Game 1 starter Jesus Luzardo. And the history, albeit in a small sample size, is not encouraging. But there is good news, the Phillies have Zack Wheeler on the mound for game 1. And his history vs. the Marlins is even better than Luzardo’s history against the Phillies. On top of that, Wheeler has a far larger sample size, having faced the Marlins 22 times in his career between his time with the Mets and now with the Phillies.
Zack Wheeler is 10-4 against the Marlins over those 22 games, with an ERA of 2.48. He also has 154 Ks over 141.1 innings. Last season they did get to him once, putting up 7 runs over 3 innings. But this season he got back to shutting them down. He went 6 innings in all 3 outings vs. the Marlins this season, with an ERA of 3.0, though the Phillies lost 2 of those games.
Wheeler has had a down season by his standards. His 3.62 ERa is the first time he has an ERA over 3.0 with the Phillies. But his ERA after the All-Star break was more in line with what we usually see from him. In the second half of the year his ERA was 3.08, and his WHIP was .95. So he is going into the playoffs on a high. And the Phillies hope that they will get another playoff performance from Zack Wheeler like they got last season where he has an ERA of 2.78 across 6 starts. He was especially great in those first 3 rounds vs. the Cardinals, Braves, and Padres.
But how have the Marlins hitters hit against him in the past? Does Wheeler have a matchup advantage? Or are there a few Marlins players who have his number?
Here is how Zack Wheeler has pitched against every Marlins hitter throughout his career:
