Jayson Stark- Bringing Back Bryce Harper this Fast Is Risky
Sometimes, it really is always sunny in Philadelphia. Right now the ray of light for us, is that Bryce Harper could be back in the lineup very soon. He has hit every bench mark he needs to hit in his rehab. the lone thing he still needs to be cleared for. Sliding. Next week Bryce Harper will meet with his surgeon, and will get word if he is cleared to start sliding. If the doctor give him the all clear. we could see him back in the lineup very soon. Like next week soon.
But all through out this healing process, there has been one man clouding up the sky and hiding the Philadelphia sun. Jayson Stark. The Hall of Fame Baseball writer is not one to lie to us and tell us what we want to hear. And from the start, he has been skeptical that Harper could return this soon. But now that it appears he will be returning this soon, Jayson Stark has another concern. Are they risking reinjury by pushing him back too soon?
“You know I’m the skeptic. Just like week Matt Gelb and I collaborated on a piece, where my role was to talk to people outside the Phillies organization… The word that came up over and over again, was risky. The sooner he returns, the greater the risk. Its possible the doctor will tell him he has to slow down. Doesn’t sound like they expect that. What happens if they give him the go ahead? What we are hearing is he could be back in the lineup as soon as LA. That’s 5 games. It would be faster than any position player has ever made it back from Tommy Johns surgery, since we have been keeping track.
I don’t want to be the guy screaming don’t do this. But you ask my opinion every week, so I give it.”
Jayson Stark also got into how the concern wont be with Bryce Harper at the plate, but everything else he would have to do in the game:
“What if he has to dive back into first? What if he is trying to go first the 3rd? You know Bryce. Do you really thing he will just casually slide feet first?… Its just human instinct to go back to what you have being doing your whole career.”
By everything we are hearing, Harper will be making his return soon. Most people are very excited about that. But Jayson Stark is more on the cautious side. We will have to wait and see if he is right to be so cautious.
