Eagles Correct Their Mistake By Bringing Back Slay
After it was reported on Wednesday that the Philadelphia Eagles would be releasing Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, it looks like the talented, verbal leader of the secondary could be back in midnight green after all.
Slay was on the final year of his contract carrying a $17.5 million dollar number. He appeared to be looking for an extension from the team with more guaranteed money. But he was unable to come to an agreement with general manager Howie Roseman for a new deal. Nor could he find another team to trade for him. As a result, the 32-year-old veteran defensive back was said to be on the move from the Birds. But, as the day went on and both sides maybe not wanting to part ways with each other, there appears to be a resolution from player and team. Slay is returning for another run at a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2023 and maybe longer.
…
Slay, 32, is still a very good player. He provides so much to the defense as a top-level corner in the league. Partner him with his teammate and fellow corner James Bradberry for another season and you have one of the best duos in all of football. Regardless of age. Bradberry agreed to a new deal with the Birds earlier in the week. These two with slot corner Avonte Maddox form one of the best trios and a big problem for opposing offenses.
The idea and notion from many Eagles fans was that they didn’t want Slay back because his play dipped in the second half of the season and he was done. Absolute nonsense. It’s one thing to not like him back on a big number and squabbling with the front office about his deal. But to say he can’t play anymore was completely wrong. He still adds plenty to the defense and secondary. He will do the same as he returns for however long he’ll be in Philadelphia
