News & Notes: Phillies Spring Training (2/16/2023)
That first sound of a baseball hitting a bat under the warm Florida sun is a yearly gift to baseball fans.
The sound of one of those baseballs hitting a car?
Funny, except for the person that hit the baseball and the one who owns that car.
There was a flurry of funny anecdotes and quality information dished out on Thursday at Phillies Training Camp as things really begin to get underway.
Trea Turner takes Batting Practice
The Phillies’ newest big money acquisition got his first swings in as a Phillie on Thursday, a welcome sight for the organization and its fans.
Just don’t ask the unlucky person who had their car hit by a foul ball.
“I’ve got $30 million reasons why he’ll pay for that” 😂

“He can afford it” 😂
Trea Turner’s first BP on the first day for pitchers and catchers, hits a car with a foul ball. The Phillies let the new $300 million man have it! 😂😂 pic.twitter.com/C4xL2TPGyh
His batting practice session also gave us one of the best traditions of spring training: The first picture of Charlie Manuel watching batting practice.

Alec Bohm Accidentally Got Swole??
Alec Bohm says he added about 10 pounds of muscle this off-season. He says it wasn’t intentional, just happened by eating better and working out.

“This year they were like ‘hey, you’re bigger,’” he said. “Normally they show up and say hey, ‘you’re skinny.’”
This one goes out to everyone hoping that Alec Bohm can hit for a little more power.
Apparently, without trying, he has gained five to 10 pounds of muscle. If the whole baseball thing doesn’t work out, it appears he has a future as a personal trainer.
Seranthony Dominguez signs a two-year extension
After capping off an incredible comeback story in 2022, the right handed reliever has signed a two-year extension with a club option for 2025.
Domínguez finished with a 3.00 ERA in 51 innings pitched during the regular season and emerged as one of Rob Thomson’s most trusted bullpen arms before a late season run-in with right triceps tightness.
The deal covers the final two years of Domínguez’s arbitration eligible years before giving the club an option of keeping him around at an $8 million price tag in 2025 or buying him out for $800,000.

Thank you very much to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Alex Coffey for providing the content we so desperately need.
Andrew Painter is the Gen Z Superstar We Need
It’s no secret that I am the youngster here at 97.5 The Fanatic and Andrew Painter is a breath of fresh air to all of us young people in the workforce who are mocked for not understanding ancient pop culture references.
Put those older generations in their older place, Andrew Painter.
"I listen to some old stuff," Andrew Painter, 19, said. "I'm not into the super-new stuff."
— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) February 16, 2023
What is old to you?
"Not like old old. But I'll listen to 2000s. Early 2010s. Maybe down into the '90s."
BONUS: Cole Hamels signs with the San Diego Padres
From the ace of the future to the ace of the past, former Phillie and 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hamels, 39, has signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
Hamels has started just one game since the beginning of the 2020 season, but he has been adamant about making a comeback to baseball.
Free-agent pitcher Cole Hamels and the San Diego Padres are in agreement on a minor-league contract, according to a source familiar with the deal.
