Enough of the sour grapes, we are not San Francisco
by John Kincade
Just a few weeks ago Eagles fans were united in their disdain for the fans of the San Francisco 49ers. The whining that came from the 49ers roster and their fan base after the NFC Championship game was equal portions laughable and pathetic. Knowing Brock Purdy out of the game was clearly not the reason the Eagles cruised to a 31-7 victory. The 49ers defense was porous, their offensive line couldn’t protect and their defense got torched. Instead of just taking their loss and accepting the part they played in it, 49ers players, fans and media tried spinning a tale. The message was that if Purdy played, the Eagles were going down. It’s ridiculous and the mocking that came from Philadelphia was very deserved.
‘Then fast forward to this week in Philadelphia. I’m flat out disappointed. You can’t one week claim that sour grapes from a losing team is unacceptable then embrace full whiner mode afterwards. As I sit and do my next days show prep I will listen to the Fanatic on the app or in the afternoons on the TV simulcast. I started taking notes. There were periods where strings of 5 callers in a row were doing the “I know we lost…but” routine. It’s just as dumb as the fans of the 49ers a few weeks back. It sucks, but it’s true.
The Eagles lost the Super Bowl. We are all so unhappy with the outcome. Unfortunately, when you are just a slim one point favorite against the NFL MVP and the best coach in the game your margin for error is slim. Fact, you can’t have an unforced error and fumble the football directly leading to 7 points when you have a 7 point lead and are driving for another score. That play coming after an unforced error by a false start on an easily convertible 3rd and 1.
In the 4th quarter of a critical sequence your punter can’t deliver a terrible effort and then your special teams can’t allow a 65 yard punt return putting the Chiefs offense on the 4 yard line. The Chiefs offense with first and goal within the 5 scored on every sequence but one in the regular season. They are a machine. You can’t play sloppy and expect to dodge the bullet too often vs Patrick Mahomes.
Those 2 sequences alone led to a gift touchdown and at the very least an easy FG attempt if the Chiefs hadn’t scored a touchdown. That’s a minimum of 10 less points. The Eagles COULD have won 35-28. Fact is, they didn’t.
One thing our fan base has never been is excuse makers. The coaches and players of the Eagles alike told the world, they lost this game. A poor decision to throw a flag within the 2 minute warning after not having any holding calls all game didn’t. The Eagles let what was within their control, slip out of it. Trying to blame the Defrnsive Coordinator or the officials is pretty weak sauce. Players make plays. Unfortunately leading directly to ten points that decided the Super Bowl, sometimes they don’t.
