It’s Time For Eagles Fans to Embrace Being Goliath
We find ourselves in a strange position as Philly fans. Usually, when our teams are in their championship, we are the underdog. And usually, we like it that way. The Phillies were certainly that vs the Astros. It didn’t work out well for us. Five years ago, the Eagles were the underdog vs the Patriots, and that did work out for us. But this year is different. For once, our team is the favorite. For once we are not David, we are Goliath.
Even the national media clowns putting us down, are complimenting us by doing so. Phill Simm’s son has been incredibly disrespectful towards Jalen Hurts, saying he has not been impressive. But even in that case, his whole point is that this Eagles team is so good, any QB could win with them. He is wrong about Hurts, but even that disrespect comes with a compliment to this team.
While we have been hyper-focused on the weirdos and losers trying to find ways to put the Eagles or their players down, we have missed that those people are a minority. It’s just 49ers players upset that they lost, and analysts whose opinions no one respected to begin with. The real consensus is that this team is good. Really good. They are favorites over a team as good as the Chiefs for a reason. ESPN gathered the predictions of 71 experts who cover the league. 45 picked the Eagles to win. Some by as much as double digits. They are playing the second-best team in the league, but nearly two-thirds of NFL experts still think they will win.
This team put up historic pass rush numbers. The Eagles have proven they can run on any defense no matter how good. They have lost just one game this season with Jalen Hurts in at QB. And they beat both of their playoff opponents so far by over 20 points. This is just a damn good team.
So for us, it is time to drop the underdog routine. It was fun in 2018, and fun when the Phillies were on their run back in October. But do you know what is more fun? Having your team be that Goliath. Being the monster everyone else is chasing after. Watching your team crush every other team in their path. I don’t want to be the scrappy boxer that beats someone out of their weight class. I want to be Muhammad Ali. To be the greatest that ever has been or ever will be. I don’t want to be the 2017 Eagles anymore. I want to be the Patriots. The team so good that championship parades become almost mundane. They might have lost that year to the Eagles, but they have 6 other rings to make themselves feel better.
So no more dog masks, no more comparisons to Rocky, and no more “No one likes us we don’t care.” This team is great and has the chance to be special. They can be that villain that every other fan hates. And not for the reason they usually don’t like us. But because they are sick of seeing us be so good every year.
There is a very good team between them and the start of that journey to greatness. The Chiefs have been there before and are already on their own journey to true greatness. But our team is better. And they are better in nearly every day apart from Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. This Eagles team is one of the deepest most talented teams in recent memory. Let’s embrace that, rather than looking for reasons to feel disrespected. Let’s go into this game knowing we are going to win because the Eagles are just that good.
Being Rocky is fun. But spoiler alert, in the first movie, Rocky loses. I don’t want to be Rocky anymore. I don’t want to be David. The Eagles aren’t David, they are Goliath. But this time David isn’t upsetting Goliath in a fight. Goliath is going to step on David. Not because David isn’t good. But because Goliath is that much better.
