Anthony’s Opening Diatribe- That Crowd Can Make a Difference
In His Opening Diatribe this morning, Anthony Gargano discussed how the Philly crowd can make a difference on Sunday…
“( Cue Eagles Fight Song). That is right. The sweet sounds of the fight song, that will be heard over and over again on Sunday. That Fight Song, sung by that crowd, 70,000 strong, will be a big deal on Sunday… That crowd is going to play a big role in the game.
We have seen this before with Philadelphia crowds. Most recently with the Phillies. Go back to the curious case of Spencer Strider. He was the prized rookie for the Braves, who has a big arm. That Friday afternoon, the series was 1-1. They didn’t think he would be ready to go. But they decided to start him. In the first inning, he was money, he looked filthy. And then there was the Stott at bat. The crowd was raucous. And much like CC Sabathia facing Myers in 08, which set up the Victorino Slam, the crowd was going wild. And you can see it got to him.
What it does is it throws you off. Your adrenaline pops. Now you are overthrowing. It is why you can’t get overly amped if you are a pitcher or a QB. I’m not saying that Purdy is going to completely melt. The moment is not going to be too big for him… However, the crowd can make a big difference. They can make it hard for him to hear the play. They can make it hard for him to think. That 70,000 loud, leather lungs, coming at him. That can throw him off a tick. In that sort of environment, the adrenaline is rolling, all of the sudden you sail one into the arms of CJ. A little bit of an overthrow to Deebo Samuel, and the next thing you know it is in the safeties’ arms cradled for an interception.”
