Eagles Bring Back Anthony Harris For Safety Help
With injuries piling up for the Philadelphia Eagles at the free safety position, they’ve decided to look for help in an old friend. They signed free agent safety Anthony Harris.
Harris spent the last two seasons with the Eagles before the organization. But they decided to make a change at the position by completing a trade with the New Orleans Saints for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. Gardner-Johnson has been fantastic for the Bird. He leads the team with six interceptions. But he went down with an injury in a November win vs the Green Bay Packers. His backup, rookie Reed Blankenship, stepped in as the starter in the team’s two wins over Tennessee and New York. But he suffered a minor knee injury against the Giants, forcing him to leave the game. With Gardner-Johnson still out for two more games and Blankenship unavailable for this weekend’s clash with the Chicago Bears, Harris’s experience in this defense was needed.
Anthony Harris signed with the Denver Broncos practice squad after the Eagles released him. Eventually, they bumped him up to the 53-man roster. But the Broncos released him last week. Allowing him to be available for the Birds to sign him to the practice squad for now. Harris is familiar with defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s scheme. He should fit right in offering a little more versatility to what Gannon may want to do with his defense.
So much has gone well for Philadelphia this season, more recently, clinching the first playoff berth in the NFL Playoffs after their win over New York on Sunday afternoon. If there is one thing that has some Eagles fans concerned this late in the season it’s possible injuries. The Birds have had a few at important positions, safety and punter, and having someone like Harris available is crucial at this time. He will not come in and be a savior but possibly a steadying presence over backup K’Von Wallace. We’ll see if this move helps the Eagles for what they need in the moment.
