Should The Eagles Add The Controversial Beckham To The Mix?
Do the Philadelphia Eagles need Odell Beckham junior? No, they don’t. But following the report from Pro Football Talk of any possible interest between the two sides… you do it.
Yes, Beckham, who is said to have recovered from the ACL tear that has caused him to miss the first 13 weeks of the season, would come with some baggage. However, when you’re looking to do what the Eagles are trying to do, which is to win a Super Bowl, and one of the more talented offensive players in the league today is available and can help — there is no downside. While the wide receiver room is very talented and if you include one of the top tight ends in the NFL in Dallas Goedert with that group, the skill players are very strong.
But as much as you may like Quez Watkins, Beckham is a better player. Imagine defenses trying to cover A.J. Brown, Davonta Smith, Beckham, Watkins, and Goedert. You cannot. The other part about this possible interest is the leadership group of the Philadelphia Eagles. Players and staff. They all seem to have a good thing going that could absorb such a strong personality, especially if he’s focused on winning.
Let’s flashback to 2017 when the Eagles were running through the NFC before the trade deadline. GM Howie Roseman made a deal to acquire Miami Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi. Adding to the running back room with LeGarrette Blount and Corey Clement, essentially replacing the injured Darren Sproles with Ajayi. When the deal was announced, many stories out of Miami reported that some teammates and members of the Dolphins organization were unhappy with Ajayi’s behavior and no longer wanted him to be a part of the team.
Once with Philadelphia during their playoff and Super Bowl run, there was never a peep about those concerns coming from the entire Eagles organization. So, if that is a tipping point as an Eagles fan, think back to how Ajayi and linebacker Nigel Bradham — who also had a bit of a checkered past — fit in with the Birds on their way to a championship.
If Beckham were to join the Eagles, they would have to find a way to spread the ball around to so many talented players. Worry about that later. If you can bring him in based off what he says and the already rostered player’s belief that this could work… it’s a no-brainer. The Super Bowl champion has already visited with his former team the New York Giants… plus, the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys. There was the belief that the Cowboys were the leaders to sign the talented free agent, but some concerns with his physical and the length of the contract seem to have gotten in the way of a possible partnership. Leaving the Eagles and others an opening to swoop (no pun intended) in.
Beckham didn’t ruin the Los Angeles Rams last season when he joined them late in the campaign as they eventually hoisted the Lombardi trophy. Sure, the Birds should be able to win it without him, but if there is an opportunity to add another potential Batman to the mix — why wouldn’t you?
