The main theme of today is appreciation. Appreciating the little things. And it has to do with the Eagles. We are kind of in the same mode of its party time. Honestly, I don’t want to do anything but eat and drink and watch sports. And this Eagles team, they’re 11-1, and they’re playing great football. And even for me who went into the season calling it the gravy year. Whatever happens, happens. You know they are going to be good. But there are no expectations. And they have made an incredible leap into being one of the elites of the NFC.
Coming into the year, I thought it would take another year before they were in the elite of the elites. We thought they would be good. One day I was drinking the green Kool-Aid and had them going 14-3. This was in the summer. And for weeks after I’m going, I must be insane. What’s wrong with me? Every week thereafter Howie Makes another signing and fortifies the defense. And when you look around the landscape of the NFL, it is hard not to zero in on the Eagles for the Superbowl.
You look at San Francisco. Losing Jimmy G is a death blow. And it’s not that Jimmy G is that good. But Jimmy G has been through those wars. Jimmy G beat the Packers. He didn’t play especially well on that day. But he is used to it. Whereas Brock purdy, Mr. Irrelevant, that’s a dramatic step-down. All along I went that is the team that scares me the most. That was a team that I had circled. And in one fell swoop, Garropolo is out…
And then you look around everywhere else. I marvel at Brady sometimes… But I don’t fear Tampa. Brady or no Brady… Eagles- Tampa, it’s the reverse of last year. Seattle? I can’t fear that team. Minnesota? Do I fear Minnesota? They’re good. But their defense is a paper tire. I look at the Giants. We have them on Sunday. And it could be close. Eagles-Giants games are always maddeningly close. But in a playoff situation, I don’t dear the Giants.
And then there is the Cowboys. They are the hype machine. Cowboys sell… But it is all a product of they get a lot of attention. So they get overhyped. But the Eagles are better. How many times are Dak and that Dallas team going to get high expectations, and then melt under the spotlight? Now it is going to be different? I don’t think so.
So I come to you today, and I ask you, are we taking the Eagles for granted?
