Corey Seidman Discusses The Phillies Signing Trea Turner
The Phillies landed their number one target of the off-season in Trea Turner. And to break down that move, “The Best Show Ever?” talked to NBC Sports Philly’s Corey Seidman. What does Turner bring to this team? What move could be next? Corey Seidman discusses that and more. Here is some of what he had to say.
On the Price It Took To Get Him…
“Everybody expected this guy was going to get $300 million, maybe a little less, maybe a little more. But to spread it out over 11 years is an AAV of $27.2 million per year. Which is obviously incredible money for 99.9% of the world. But look at the landscape of MLB contracts, that is 27th all year in per year value. Prices only go up as years go by. Trea Turner is a top 10, maybe a top 7 all-around player. That is a pretty good price. It is also less than the Phillies cleared up just in the form of Jean Segura and Didi Gregorious coming off the books… It basically pays for Trea Turner.”
On What Turner Brings to the Table…
“I don’t know if Trea Turner is as big a name or selling point to the casual baseball fan as Bryce Harper is. But this has a chance to be just as impactful of a move. You put this guy on a roster that already has Bryce Harper and JT Realmuto. Turner may be the best all-around player of the bunch when you combine offense, defense, baserunning, and the position he plays.”
On The Phillies Next Move…
“I think there is a lot the Phillies can accomplish in terms of the starting pitcher market… The next option some people have is Carlos Rodon. I don’t think that is all that realistic… But in terms of pitchers you could see the Phillies chase. Chris Bassitt is out there. probably a guy you can get on a 2 or 3-year deal… Jameson Taillon is a name the Phillies have been attached to… There is Nate Eovaldi who Dave Dombrowski has some history with at Boston…
As we saw in the Playoffs run, the Phillies didn’t have a 4th starter. They need someone at that point of the season you can trust to go 5 innings. They have Wheeler, Nola, Suarez, and question marks beyond that… You need to go out and sign some veteran arms to supplement this roster. And you don’t sign Trea Turner if you don’t plan to do that.”
