Anthony’s Opening Diatribe- That Loss Is Squarely on Jonathan Gannon
See what Anthony Gargano had to say in his opening Diatribe this morning…
The sky is not falling. The season is not over. It is not going off the cliff. It is one loss. But it is an infuriating loss. Because it is indicative of an issue, and a fear, that we all had entering the season. And that fear is personified by defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
The reason why they lost yesterday is that they allowed Washington to have long sustained drives. They allowed a team that had struggled mightily on 3rd down, to convert 15 of them. And they did that by getting gashed on the ground for the second week in a row. That is a defensive coordinator problem. He is late on his adjustments again. That was inexcusable. We have seen this play before. It is a repeat… He was late again. And he caused those long drives.
You see your getting gashed. Are you really that worried about Heinicke? I love McLaurin too, but he still beat you. That is the problem. If you tell me you are afraid of McLaurin. Okay. You are afraid of getting beat down the field. Okay. But he still did it. You have a guy like Heinicke. Who god bless him, he is a competitor. But he has no arm… Heinicke’s arm is average at best. he floats the ball. You can’t be afraid of that. And it’s all based on analytics. “The more plays they run, the more chances they are going to shoot themselves in the foot.” But what is lost in that thinking is the fact they are going to gash you. What if they can just run the ball, and have patience?
What they showed you, is they have the patience to take what you gave them. Your gonna play your corners off, and your going to go light in the box. Okay, I have a Rb from Alabama, and I am going to feed him. I can be patient. And in fact I want to be patient, because Im going to keep yopur offense off the field.
This is why Gannon’s plan makes no sense. You have to match your offense. The Eagles have a high-strike offense. You need to get them possessions. And to get them possessions, you don’t want the other team bleeding clock. Your schemes have to marry each other. You don’t want the other team bleeding clock, and converting first downs. It keeps ypour offense off of the field.
That was a horrible performance by Jonathan Gannon… He was passive. And that is what he is about. Gannon plays defense passively. I thought there was a point he got out of that. But it’s back. That loss is squarely on Jonathan Gannon…
