The Amazing October run is going to roll right into November!
by John Kincade
Imagine the last 13 Octobers and then contemplate the excitement we are all going to be feeling the next 3 nights when the Phillies take on the Astros in the 2022 World Series. That alone makes this one of the best times we all could ever remember. It’s been awhile since we watched October baseball and honestly, there were too many times that the Eagles failed to pick up our collective psyche. That has most certainly changed after their trouncing of the Steelers on Sunday. Throw in an Eastern Conference Championship for the Philadelphia Union and 2022 has written a whole new chapter in excitement.
It reminds me of sophomore year in high school. The Phillies won the World Series, the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl, the Flyers played for the Stanley Cup and the 76ers competed for the NBA Title. Four teams that all made their way to competing for a title, only one parade, but nobody was complaining. It was an era of unspeakable joy. That was before the Phillies had ever won a World Series. That was before the Eagles had ever won a Super Bowl. Nobody cared about soccer either. This is a different time.
This is a Phillies run we will be talking about with our grandchildren. The highlights will be burned into our brains. That Rhys Hoskins bat spike will live on forever. The Bryce Harper home run will be celebrated in video form in that stadium forever. To host three World Series games rolling into November is historic. Everything about this Phillies season feels that way. It’s an incredible accomplishment. Don’t let one chance to scream, clap or celebrate in your own home be put to waste. They need a minimum of one win to ensure that the series returns to Houston. That would give you plans for Friday.
Let’s not forget the rampage that the Philadelphia Eagles are on. This is just the second time that we have seen the Eagles get to (7-0). The last time they did they advanced to Super Bowl 39. Unlike that season, they currently have 2 fewer losses than anyone in their division and the road ahead looks easily navigated. Moments like the injury to Jordan Davis yesterday show you the brutality of the game and how fragile winning can be. You need good health and the depth to survive the damage taken along the way. This Eagles team looks very special. Honestly they look better than in any other season I can remember.
Congratulations to the Union on their first Eastern Conference Title and MLS Cup berth. It’s hard to crack the collective fandom of this city. Jim Curtin and the Union players do a fantastic job of selling their product and connecting with this fan base. They are growing and selling their sport. A championship would go a long way towards cementing a legacy.
So, let’s review!
The next three nights you have a date with the National League Champion Phillies. Thursday night the Eagles will be in Houston to attempt to start (8-0). If the Astros win one here you have plans Friday night. Buckle up, it’s going to be one of the most gut wrenching weeks in Philly sports that any of us can remember. Hopefully we will be talking about it thirty years from now! Enjoy!
