With Phillies in spotlight, Howie and the Eagles go all in!
by John Kincade
You can’t turn on the radio, TV or visit a website in Philadelphia without being bombarded with “RED OCTOBER”! It’s a beautiful thing isn’t it? The joy being felt all over the area is amazing. It’s unifying. It’s hopeful. There almost isn’t any space for anything else to breathe! Enter Howie Roseman…he has plans of his own.
The NFL Trade Deadline doesn’t come until Tuesday afternoon. As recently as yesterday on our show Adam Schefter told us that “you know Howie is making calls” but there was no idea what position group he was looking to bolster. Then came the news late yesterday afternoon, the Eagles had acquired Defensive End Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears. It was an impactful move that shocked the football world and made a large statement that the Eagles are all in on chasing another Super Bowl title.
Robert Quinn had 18.5 sacks last season. He only has one this year after the coaching change in Chicago. The system changed but the drop off has been immense. He is guaranteed no money after this season. The cost of a 4th round draft pick in 2023 seems outrageously low. You have to wonder whether the low price had a lot to do with a soft market, because his production has been impressive over his career. He’s also been erratic. He has strong runs and then drops off in production. His career reads like an EKG. What Howie Roseman is hoping for is that he has 3 great months of football left in the tank to push his team over the top.
This tells you that with the Packers, Buccaneers and 49ers all with 4 losses that the Eagles see a golden opportunity to succeed. The closest danger are the impressive 6-1 NY Giants. At this point few are taking them seriously. The Eagles currently have a 61% chance to secure the top seed in the NFC and the bye week! They still have 11 games to play. We haven’t seen this weak a market recently unless you have checked your 401K. When there is blood in the water, that is when a shark strikes. Howie again proves to be that shark.
It feels arrogant and a bit premature, but you have heard the expression that the only team that can beat somebody is themselves. In the NFC, this certainly seems true. Barring a destructive injury, the Eagles are flying high. They need to tighten up on many parts of their collective game, but it’s more fine tuning than an overhaul.
As the Phillies have our collective attention monopolized for the next week or so, the Eagles have 2 more games where they will be heavily favored. They are double digit favorites over the Steelers and are currently projected to be 9 point favorites on the road in a short week fame at Houston next Thursday. Howie loves working u DET a cloak of darkness and pouncing. This time he used “Red October” as his cover to make his Eagles an even more formidable opponent.
