Anthony Gargano’s Opening Diatribe- Are the Roaring ’20’s Here?
Could we be in the roaring ’20s? Going into 2020 we felt like the Twenties would be the decade for Philly sports. It did not start out the way we hoped. But now in 2022, things are looking great. So are the roaring ’20s here? That is what Anthony Gargano discussed in his Opening Diatribe this morning. Here is what he had to say when he opened his show…
We have a big weekend at hand. It is Double Birds. Phillies and Cardinals beginning Friday, playoff baseball, it is in stone. You’ve got to love the matchup. Of all the matchups Phillies- Cardinals is the one you wanted the most. You could hand-pick it. Fightins against Goldsmight and Arenado. They are a good team. Certainly a good lineup. But not exactly great pitching. And they’re a very right-handed laden lineup. The Phillies are live.
I hate to say it, but I have no fear of the Arizona Cardinals. Usually, if I have no fear, it’s the reverse psychology, where you go I don’t like the fact that I’m not worried. But this time I don’t even care. It’s gonna be another 5-0. That’s all I start thinking about.
Is this the roaring twenties in earnest? Because it feels like it. Obviously, the Flyers have to make due. They are a ways behind. But the other 3 teams, plus the Union, it looks good. It feels like it is the roaring ’20s. This Eagles team, you tell me, are they real or fugazi? I say real all the way. Look at them. I know I’m Jolly Charlie. and like to look at things from a positive standpoint. However, I did not think last year’s Philly teams were real. I thought they were fugazi. I didn’t think the Eagles were real last year in the postseason. But I love what Howie did in the offseason. Now they are certainly real.
I think the Phillies are real. That payroll is real. You have boppers. they may not be a World Series team, but they are building back. They will tweak the lineup. And then you have a couple of young stud pitchers coming up, exactly what they need. And then all of a sudden you are back in the mix.
That leaves the Sixers. I know there is some dubiousness with the Sixers. But if you step back, you look at the team that now has the deepest bench they have had in a long time. You look at Harden coming to play. Then you can see Tyrese Maxey. He just scores in bunches. The big 3 is Embiid Harden and Maxey, which actually makes Tobias an incredible 4. That is a lot of real.
To me that all equates to the Roaring ’20s.
