Anthony Gargano’s Opening Diatribe- “Welcome To Red October”
For the first time in 11 years, it is a Red October. The Phillies are in the playoffs. And as you may have expected, Anthony was fired about in his Opening Diatribe this morning.
Here is how Anthony opened his show this morning.
“Welcome to Red October.
It feels good man. It’s Red October. I don’t care if it’s a 3rd wild card. Its playoffs. They made the playoffs, they broke the drought. 11 long years since the Phillies had the 4 Aces and inexplicably lost in that game 5 to Chris Carpenter 1 bloody nil on that fateful October night. Who would have thought that would be the last playoff berth for 11 years?
I remember it like it was yesterday. Raul Ibanez hit a bomb that got knocked down in right-center field. Any other time that ball is out and the Phillie win. To me, they were still the best team that year. I think they would have won the World Series. And after that, Ryan Howard got hurt, and the team started to fade a little bit. And then all that stuff ensued.
I’ll never forget, the following year, the Phillies opened in Pittsburgh. I was talking to Charlie, and he goes ‘Anthony, we’ve got a bunch of leprechauns.’ That was the year with Ben Revere. Then we went from Ben Revere to the dark days of the mannequin, Ryne Sanberg. From there, it was Klentak and McPhail, two despicable characters. Then it was the Gabe, and spitting out the ice cream, and all that nonsense.
And then finally, through Girardi and his miserable face. Finally Robby Thomson and Bryce Harper. It’s fantastic. The Fightins are in the playoffs.
Choonis! The Choonis Train is chugging. Let me hear it!
(Plays montage of the Phillies beating the Astros and making the playoffs)
How bout it? Fightins in the playoffs Baby.
Look, we have been through too many baseball playoffs, you know October is the great evener. When you boil it down to the best of 3, anybody is vulnerable. Anything can happen. And if you play the Cardinals, I gotta tell you, I like their chances a lot. Because you have the advantage in the pitching matchups. I think its paramount to play the Cardinals.
A part of me would like to play the Mets. Just because they look really tight to me. But, the Choonis is right, you want to get the easier matchup…
I love their chances. I can see it, actually, I smell a first-round victory. That is what I feel.
Red October is here!”
