The Audio Vault- Doug Pederson’s Return To Philly
With Doug Pederson returning on Sunday, Andrew saw fit to dedicate this vault to the former Eagles coach. He grabbed the best, and some of the worst, moments from Doug Pederson’s time in Philly. From them winning the Super Bowl, to him claiming it was our new norm, which we now know was not true. So here is today’s Audio Vault, replaying Doug Pederson’s career in Philly.
Doug’s Introductory Press Conference
Doug Pederson’s introduction here didn’t go great. In his first press conference, he was grilled about play calling, and his role in the Chiefs offense and Doug’s answers did not inspire much confidence.
Doug P’s Speech After His First Win
Things went up from there. Doug Pederson won his first game as head coach vs the Browns. And it was clear to see the difference when speaking to his players, compared to speaking to the media. He may have sounded nervous in press conferences, but he leads the room when talking to his players. The guys in the locker room clearly loved playing for him.
Speech After the Steelers Win the Following Week
The Eagles started 3-0 his first year. And the third win was a commanding one over the Steelers. And Doug gave another rousing speech afterward.
“As Long as We Don’t Screw Him Up”
This was one that haunted Doug Pederson. While Carson Wentz still looked like an MVP, Doug was mic’d up talking to 49ers GM John Lynch. In it, Doug gushed about how great Wentz was. And he said the infamous words “As long as we don’t screw him up.” And unfortunately, they did. Just a few years later both Wentz and Doug were gone, and Wentz has never regained that form.
Announces Carson Wentz’s Torn ACL
Another thing, that at the time seemed like a low point, was when Doug P announced Carson Wentz’s torn ACL. Most people felt it would derail what seemed like their season. But Doug had a way to make it sound like it would be okay. And of course, it ended up being okay. They still won the Super Bowl even without Wentz.
“You Want Philly Philly?”
One of the gutsiest calls of all time. On 4th down, in the red zone, in the Super Bowl, Dougie P and Nick Foles called for what would go on to be known as The Philly Special. It’s perhaps the most iconic moment in Philly Sports history. It birthed t-shirts, and a statue, and helped the team win its first-ever Super Bowl.
“This Is Our New Norm”
Words that at the time were great, and now haunt us. The Eagles won their first-ever Super Bowl, and Dougie P claimed it was the new norm for Philly. We all loved it when he said it, and we all felt like he was telling the truth. But things started to go downhill, and now he is coaching another team, and Wentz is the QB for another team. But we will always have Philly Philly.
