Cooney’s Column: “I Have A Feeling Something Special Is Coming”
By: Bob Cooney
It is that time of the year to ride the wave. Not talking about down the shore, either.
We’ve seen teams in this city, and of course nationally, ride the waves of an inexplicable season into a measure of success that we didn’t see believable. The best examples locally would be the 1993 Phillies…………. The 2001 Sixers…………… and the Super Bowl winning Eagles of 2018.
Yes all those seasons ended with championship appearances and two of them culminating in titles. Now I’m not here to say that these Phillies are going to win the World Series, but there is a feeling surrounding this team that I can’t deny has me thinking something special is going to happen for the rest of the season.
Shortcomings, there are more than a few. Bullpen. Centerfield. Injuries. And yet there is something about this Rob Thomson led team that has me believing that they just may be able to pull a rabbit out of a hat and surprise us to the extremes that the aforementioned teams did.
I don’t say this lightly. I’ve been around sports way too long to let a streak of 10 win in 12 games – in any sport – cloud my thoughts on a team that, as I said earlier, has more than a few deficiencies. But as I was told as a young child you can’t help how you feel. And with this Phillies team, I feel something, dare I say special? Yeah, I’m gonna say it. Cause let’s remember this, the Phillies are winning without the expected hitting of several players, without perhaps their second best overall player in Gene Segura and a bullpen that leaks more than a talkative Howie Roseman.
I can’t give viable reasons for thinking the way I currently am. But just like all the boogie boarders I’ll see this weekend, ride the wave people. It may take you to a pretty cool place.
