MAIN EVENT TIME
Edson Barboza VS Shane Burgos
Edson Barboza should be 2-0 at 145 pounds. And the UFC is treating him as such giving him a really tough test in “Hurricane” Shane Burgos. Burgos has been out for a while after dropping a fight to Josh Emmett who shredded up both his knees in the bout. (bad loss in my opinion.) I like Barboza in this one. I think hes very dangerous at 145. But what does worry me is his chin. Is it gone? Because if it is, and Burgos connects, its good night. It should be a great scrap and Ill go with the vet in this one.
Edson Barboza +120
Vivian Araujo VS Katlyn Chookagian
Am I soley picking Chookagian because shes local? No. Admittedly it doesn’t hurt though….but Im mainly picking Chookagian because I love her ability to hit and move. She never stands still. Peppering her opponent with shots and getting out of the way. Ignore her loss to Valentina. Because everyone losses to Valentina. And her fight with Andrade was a set back but nothing to be ashamed of because of Andrade’s power. When you look at the quality of opponent, this is a big step up for Araujo. Shes never fought someone as good as Chookagian. And I dont think she comes out victorious on Saturday
Katlyn Chookagain -145
Matt Schnell VS Rogerio Bontorin
This is kind of a must win for Bontorin who, if he losses will have lost 3 in a row. And hes facing Matt Schnell who is ascending in the 125 pound division. Schnell looked REALLY good last fight. Putting on a clinic against Tyson Nam. Hes won 5 of his last 6 and has been on a tear. I might be inclined to pick Bontorin if it werent for how sharp and crips Schnell’s striking was last fight. I think he pushes Bontorin’s streak to 3.
Matt Schnell -160
Tony Ferguson VS Beneil Dariush
This one is really tough. Before the press conference I liked Ferguson to get back in the win column. But the press conference wasnt a good look for Tony. He looked bad, sounding incoherent at times. Take from that what you will. But Dariush brought up a good point when he said “Tony has to realize that Im in front of him. Not Khabib.” And while Tony then hit Dariush with a bunch of insults, hes right. Ferguson still seems transfixed on fighting Khabib. And he better realize that in front of him is one of the better, more underrated lightweights in the world.
Dariush enters this fight on a 6 fight win streak. He also trains at one of the best gyms in the world (Kings MMA) and has really good training partners because of it. To be fair, you cant mimic Tony Ferguson’s game. But hes been crushing people since falling to then short notice Alex Hernandez. On the flip side, Tony has looked bad in his last two fights. REALLY bad. You have to wonder if father time finally caught up to Tony.
He got WORKED against Justin Gaethje. He got rag dolled against headliner Charles Oliveira. This could either be a get right fight for Tony, or a sign that he just doesnt have it anymore. The only thing that worries me is Dariush’s weight cut. He made weight, but on a second attempt. Tony though doesnt have knock out power, more peppering your face up with shots. But with all that said, I like Dariush in this one to continue Tony’s losing streak.
Beneil Dariush -165 (lock)
Charles Oliveira VS Michael Chandler
Well Chandler said he was going to burst down the door when he showed up in the UFC and he certainly did that. Destroying Dan Hooker in less than 3 minutes. But Charles Oliveira is not Dan Hooker. If Beneil Dariush is one of the most underrated lightweights in the world, than Charles Oliveira IS the most underrated. Hes 30-8 and is just 31. Hes been in the UFC as long as Chandler has been fighting. And hes been mauling everyone since his last loss 4 years ago.
Michael Chandler has punching power. We saw that against Hooker. And his wrestling ability is obviously top notch. But you arent going to want to go to the ground with Oliveira. So Chandler is going to have to rely on knocking Oliveira out, something that hasnt happened since Oliveira’s last loss to Paul Felder. I like Oliveira in this one by submission.
Charles Oliveira -140 (lock)
