A New Level to the “New” Fresh Prince of Philadelphia
While we all know Ben Simmons has embraced his new nickname as the “Fresh Prince” of Philadelphia, some TV execs are taking it to the next level by green lighting a script for a show based around Simmons life, sound familiar?
I doubt the beginning of “Brotherly Love” will begin with In West Philadelphia Born and Raised.. but either way, I’m marking this down as must see TV.
Per Deadline, some details of the show include:
- Brotherly Love is inspired by the life of Ben Simmons and centers on a unique sibling relationship within a multi-ethnic family. Together, they pursue their dreams while navigating life in the spotlight in Philadelphia, a passionate city where sports is in your blood, and your blood is always boiling. <-(hahahahaha, true.)
- Rex/ShutterstockKourtney Kang executive produces alongside LeBron James and Maverick Carter via their SpringHill Entertainment. Patrick Kang and Michael Levin serve as co-executive producers, while Ben Simmons and his brother Sean Tribe will be consulting producers. Warner Bros. TV, where SpringHill has a deal, is the studio.
- There is a lot of shared real-life experience that will be going into crafting the story and characters of the comedy. Simmons was born and raised in Australia to an Australian mother and American-born professional basketball player father. The interracial couple raised their two kids, including Simmons, along with four other half-siblings, including Sean, as one big family.
As a native Philadelphian, there is nothing I enjoy more than watching movies/TV shows that take place in the city. Call me cheesy but I like to see an outsiders perspective on how things work here. Also, we may have not landed LeBron, we hopefully will land some quality TV from him. I haven’t seen a prospective start date, but in the mean time I’m sure DJ Jazzy Jeff and The OG Fresh Prince can come up with another catchy theme song that will have generations singing the tune long after the show is off the air.
