The MLB trade deadline is August 2nd and the Philadelphia Phillies have more holes than swiss cheese. Shortstop, second base, center field, starter, reliever. There is A LOT on the wish list of Dave Dombrowski. But according to Jayson Stark of The Athletic, just because the Phillies have been mired in a playoff slump spanning more than a decade, doesnt mean the team is ready to part with some of their prized prospects.
Here are the 5 players the Phillies are NOT planning to trade according to Stark.
SP - Andrew Painter
Unless its for Juan Soto, the Phillies SHOULDNT part with the former 13th overall pick. At just 19 Painter has already reached High A Jersey shore this season and is the teams best pitcher. Between A ball and High A nothing really has changed.
15 games: 1.47 ERA in 61.1 IP. 98 K's to just 21 BB.
SP - Mick Abel
The 20 year old former 1st round pick has spent the entire season in High A Jersey Shore and his stuff has shown.
16 games: 3.92 ERA in 78 IP. 94 K's to just 33 BB.
C - Logan O'Hoppe
The Phillies really found something in the 23rd round when they took O'Hoppe. He has flourished into one of the games top catching prospects. In his first season in AA Reading hes hitting...
.269/.385/.877 with 15 home runs and 45 RBI in 260 at bats.
SP - Griff McGarry
a 5th round pick in 2021 McGarry has been a fast riser through the Phillies system. Hes already reached AA Reading and not only skipped a beat but has actually improved his numbers. With 2 teams...
15 games: 3.66 ERA in 59 IP. 96 K's to just 32 BB
SP - Ben Brown
Another find for the Phillies late in the draft, this time in the 33rd round of the 2017 draft. Brown has blossomed into one of the better starters in the Phillies system at the age of 22. A bit surprising name on Starks list but hes enjoying a really good season at High A.
16 games: 3.08 ERA in 73 IP. 105 K's to just 23 BB
