No matter what men might say, it is a known fact that men typically hate going to the doctor. In fact, according to a study by Cleveland Clinic, 65% of men avoid going to the doctor for as long as possible. And 72% of men would rather spend their time doing household chores than go in for their annual appointments.

There is a constant stigma of vulnerability that surrounds men when visiting the doctor, as well as fear about what the doc might have to say. About 37% of men keep critical information from their doctors because they are scared of having to deal with negative issues.

But staying on top of your health now will help prevent potential issues in the future. That’s why our friends at Virtua Health put together this list of 4 easy ways for men to stay healthy and happy.

  • Annual Appointments

Annual doctor’s visits are vital to staying healthy. If you haven’t had yours yet this year, take a few minutes and schedule one now. Your doctor will ask for updates on your health history as well as do a few short exams to make sure everything is working properly.

  • Screenings Galore

While women have screenings that are specific to them, men also need to be proactive about their health. Starting around age 45, men should get a prostate exam to check if they have signs of cancer. Additionally, colorectal screenings around age 45 are important for keeping up with your health.

  • Exercise

When it comes to being healthy, exercise is necessary. Depending on factors like age and weight, different workouts might be recommended. But aim to work out between 30 and 90 minutes each day, switching between moderate-intensity physical activity and strength-training physical activity. Yes, golf can even be considered one or two of your work-outs, assuming you’re not riding the golf cart the whole time.

  • Healthy Eating

Maintaining a healthy diet is extremely important, especially as you get older. As much as we want to, we can’t eat like teenagers forever! Always include fruits and vegetables in your meals. Adult men need between 2 ½ and 4 cups of veggies every day as well as 2 cups of fruit to get all of the vitamins and minerals needed.
