It Is Okay to Fairly Demand More From Stars Like Bryce Harper
If you are reading this, thank you. I just know that a lot of people won’t click on the link and will react to the headline and freak out. So thank you for making the effort… something that wasn’t shown in the 4th inning of yesterday’s Phillies game by Bryce Harper.
The Phillies were leading 2-0 in San Francisco when Bryce Harper came up to bat with runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs. The biggest story from that at-bat were the two up and in fastballs thrown toward Harper that emptied the dugouts and bullpen.
But I want to talk about how the at bat ended. Harper hit a sharp groundball to Giants shortstop Brett Wisely. Wisely threw the ball offline forcing first baseman Wilmer Flores to get off the bag. That play typically results in Harper standing on first base. Instead, he was still far from the bag, Flores finished the play by tagging the bag, and the inning ended.
Giving Bryce Harper His Flowers
So, before I give you my opinion, let me give all the flowers to Harper. This is why I thank you for actually reading the article and not just the headline (I am probably reading a “Philly media always tries to run players out of town” tweet as you read this).
Harper has been worth every penny. I have never questioned the signing, his on-the-field leadership, and his effort. Harper will make a case to be on the “Mt Rushmore of Phillies players” when everything is all said and done. Okay, there is your bouquet. Now it is time to talk about what should have happened.
Bryce Harper Has To Hustle There
If there were no runners on base and the exact same situation played out, this isn’t a talking point. If the Phillies had not lost the previous two games to the Giants, three straight overall, and shut out the previous game, this isn’t a talking point. Those things happened though.
A 2-0 lead in a baseball game is not even safe with your best pitcher. Yesterday it was Christopher Sanchez and not Zack Wheeler.
The Phillies ultimately won the game 6-1 so that play does not matter in the big picture of the game. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t still hold certain players, including Bryce Harper, to a certain standard.
If he hustles down the line, Garrett Stubbs scores. Alec Bohm, who sits third in RBI this season across baseball then comes up to bat with another runner in scoring position, and Nick Castellanos who had his best game all season would have followed him if the inning continued.
It is okay to fairly hold players to a certain standard. Hustling down the first base line in that situation is fair to ask for. We would say the same thing for every other player in the lineup, why should Harper be treated differently? I love Bryce Harper. He should not be benched for this, but it is okay to point it out.
