3 Observations From The Phillies Sweep of The Nationals
The Phillies have not lost a series since the first week of April when they dropped 2 of 3 to the Reds. First week of April… we are in the back half of May. The Phillies have been on fire and there are many reasons why.
Here are my 3 observations from their most recent series where they swept the Nationals in 3 games.
Alec Bohm Drives In Runs
After driving in 5 RBI on Sunday, Alec Bohm took over the league lead in runs batted in with 42. What amazes me about Alec Bohm is how he is driving in those runs. For the longest time, the third baseman on a team is supposed to hit 25-30 home runs.
Bohm has never hit more than 20 in a season in his career, and he may not reach that this year. Should that matter when the guy will drive in 100 RBI? No. It shouldn’t. Ignore what the baseball analytic nerds will say at the end of the season when he doesn’t have many home runs. He is impactful in the way that he is.
The Bench Piece Is Still A Hero For the Phillies
We LOVE bench pieces. They lead to ridiculous arguments about whether or not they should start over other starters. Whether the discussion is ridiculous or not, we all love when the bench player has big games.
That is what Kody Clemens continues to do. He went 4 for 7 with a home run in the series against the Nationals driving in 3 runs and scoring 3 of his own. There are multiple reasons why Turner’s injury hasn’t killed the Phillies. Clemens is one of them.
Matt Strahm Has Been Incredible
After pitching way too much to start the season in 2023, Matt Strahm seemed to get in a lot of jams toward the end of the regular season and in the playoffs. This year, he has been close to perfect. Another shutout inning during this series with the Nationals brought down his ERA to .95. That ERA is 12th best in all of baseball amongst relievers that have pitched at least 18 innings this season.
