Haason Reddick Contract Question Has Simple Solution
Haason Reddick led a ferocious, record-setting pass rush for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. The three-year, $45 million contract he signed in free agency last offseason turned into an incredible bargain for Howie Roseman and the front office.
The Camden native and former Temple University star clearly outperformed his salary in his first season in Philadelphia. Will the incredible effort lead to a new contract? Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer weighed in as a guest on The John Kincade Show.
Reddick Crushes Competition
Reddick is tied for the 16th-highest salary among NFL edge rushers. His $15 million average annual value (AAV) falls well short of the other pass rushers in the league’s elite tier.
Aaron Donald sets the market as the most accomplished defensive player in the NFL. He’s an elite interior tackle and an elite pass rusher, and he deserves every cent of his $31 million AAV. Other stars like Myles Garrett ($25 million AAV), Maxx Crosby ($23.5 million AAV), and Khalil Mack ($23.5 million AAV) also make significantly more than Reddick though.
“He just got done going through how he’s a top-five guy. He kind of feels disrespected because last year he wasn’t in the conversation in some people’s minds in terms of defensive player of the year.” -Jeff McLane
McLane pointed out that there was talk around the league about how the Hasson Reddick contract would go down as the best of the 2022 free agent class. He even mentioned Joe Banner as one of the biggest proponents.
Haason Reddick Contract Situation
Reddick signed the contract just over a year ago. Fans can consequently point to his obligation to play on the terms of that contract. However, McLane gave some further explanation.
“It’s not that simple. These are not guaranteed contracts. These guys have got to try to get as much as they can in their careers. Who knows what’s going to happen? I think the way it will be resolved, probably, is incentives.” -McLane
Will the value contract actually come back to bite the Eagles? Should fans worry about a situation with an unhappy star player causing a divide within the locker room? The possibility became a hot topic last week.
“I do think some of the drama was media manufactured…I’m around the team. I know stuff that maybe other people don’t know, and it was an open-ended question to Haason.” -McLane
Brandon Graham skipped (voluntary) OTAs in 2017. The Eagles mitigated the situation by adding salary escalators to his contract. They identified a fair grievance for an especially reliable and loyal player, and the situation never became a legitimate issue.
“That’s (adding incentives is) something you may see them do for Reddick. They’re not going to tear up the contract and restructure one year in, but I could see them doing something like that to make him happy.” -McLane
An organization that harps on emotional intelligence as much as the Eagles has the ability to handle the circumstances correctly. They can take care of the situation without drama.
