Phillies Hitting
Dave Dombrowski assembled an impressively deep lineup of sluggers that should rank towards the top of the MLB leaderboards in major categories.
The Phillies averaged 4.97 runs per game before the break, sitting third behind only the juggernaut New York Yankees and a sliver behind the pesky Arizona Diamondbacks. They’re about where most analysts would’ve predicted, but a different context shows the real accomplishment of their offensive performance leading into the MLB All-Star Break.
Trea Turner, J.T. Realmuto, Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Brandon Marsh all spent time on the injured list early in the season. While the pitching staff stayed relatively healthy, the Phillies impressively withstood a barrage of injuries to lineup regulars.
The Phillies rank third in batting average, tied for third in OPS, and sixth in home runs despite five lineup regulars missing a combined 96 games.
Games Played | Games Missed on IL | Percentage of Phillies Games Played | |
Trea Turner | 57 | 38 | 59% |
J.T. Realmuto | 51 | 31 | 53% |
Brandon Marsh | 75 | 9 | 78% |
Bryce Harper | 81 | 9 | 84% |
Kyle Schwarber | 85 | 9 | 89% |
Alec Bohm has kept the lineup surging with 70 RBI and an MLB best 33 doubles. His breakout into a legitimate middle of the order bat has steadied an offense with so many changing parts.
Harper posted an outstanding .982 OPS before the All-Star Break. Only Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, and Juan Soto outdid him. His 21 home runs land him in a tie for 11th in the majors, but all 10 players ahead of him have played more games.
Turner does not currently qualify as the NL batting leader despite his .349 average. If he plays all 66 of Philadelphia’s remaining games with the same at-bat frequency as his first 57 games, he would narrowly make the eligibility cut.
Christian Yelich currently leads the NL in batting average among qualified hitters at .326.
Phillies Fielding
The Phillies are one of only 11 MLB teams with a positive defensive grade by the FanGraphs Defensive Runs Saved metric. They rank ninth at +3.1 despite a 26th-place finish last season at -6.2.
Bryce Harper’s transition to first base created lineup flexibility for Rob Thomson. It allowed Schwarber to stay out of the outfield and helped stack the lineup with bats that can overshadow minimal offensive production from a strong defensive center fielder like Johan Rojas.
Harper still has work to do developing fluent judgment at first base, but his incredible athleticism has given the Phillies an element they never saw from Rhys Hoskins.
Turner entered the season hoping to improve from a tough defensive season in 2023. He’s still struggled to make plays consistently enough at shortstop, however.
The return of J.T. Realmuto will also help the Phillies defensively to finish the 2024 season.
Room For Improvement
Nick Castellanos struggled out of the gates, but he’s slowly made progress and brought his season numbers to a respectable point.
Bryson Stott limped into the break with a tough series against the Oakland Athletics. He struck out four times in the second game of the series in at-bats that don’t align with the confident hitter who succeeded in the first looks of his MLB career.

Lane Thomas and Taylor Ward look like logical trade candidates.
