Rhys Hoskins Returns To Standing Ovation At Citizens Bank Park [VIDEO]
Philadelphia will never alter its reputation as a demanding sports city that dishes out relentless pressure to opposing teams. However, a long-time contributor like Rhys Hoskins can still bring out the soft side of the Citizens Bank Park faithful.
Phillies fans greeted the Milwaukee Brewers first baseman with a long standing ovation before his first at-bat as an opposing player in Philadelphia.
Rhys Hoskins Gets Standing Ovation
The ride in Philadelphia clearly meant the world to Rhys Hoskins. He knew the return would be emotional.

His former manager Rob Thomson saw it coming days beforehand.
“He should get a huge ovation… (He’s) such a great guy, such a big part of what we did in (20)22. Even with him on the injured list last year, he was just a leader in the clubhouse, a leader in the community. I’m happy he’s coming.” -Rob Thomson (6/1/24)
Public address announcer Dan Baker usually reserves his best player introductions for the home team. Monday night’s matchup against the Brewers was a rare exception.
The best home field crowd in baseball rose to their feet. Children waved signs for one of the only players they’d seen come through the organization to become a star. The supposedly ferocious, unforgiving Philadelphia crowd cheered an opponent in a special circumstance.
The Phillies also paid tribute to Hoskins with a video montage between the first and second innings on the illustrious big screen in left field.
Hoskins’ Phillies Career
Hoskins spent the first six seasons of his MLB career with the Phillies. He belted 148 home runs and collected an .844 OPS in his red pinstripes.
He was the young prospect who kickstarted the transition out of a forgettable era. His incredible hot streak to finish the 2017 season breathed hope into a fan base that hadn’t seen anything to cheer about in far too long.
The homegrown slugger also hit six home runs during the run to the World Series in 2022. Most famously, his bat spike home run in Game 3 of the NLDS sent Citizens Bank Park into euphoria.
Phillies fans should appreciate Rhys Hoskins in hindsight, but they shouldn’t make the mistake of revisionist history to call him a former fan favorite.
His streaky tendencies and subpar fielding drew criticism from a fan base that was tired of waiting for a return to the postseason. He didn’t receive much praise from the home crowd during the overwhelming majority of his Phillies career.
Phillies Legacy
The bat spike symbolized a breakthrough. It was his first playoff game with the Phillies and the first playoff game at Citizens Bank Park since the 2011 NLDS.
An early home run from the most recognizable homegrown regular on the 2022 team meant that the pain of a dormant era was finally behind the Phillies.

The Red October crowd actually booed Hoskins, however, during pregame introductions that afternoon before Game 3. A rough game at first base had just played a major part in allowing the Braves to even the series in Game 2.
The bat spike solidified the memories of Rhys Hoskins for a lot of Phillies fans, but it came in his 672nd major league game. He played 12 more games with the Phillies after it.
The crowd also gave Hoskins the cheers he deserved in 2023 when he appeared at Citizens Bank Park. His legacy in Philadelphia lives based on his overall track record with the benefit of hindsight and his exceptional presence in the local community.
Former players don’t always receive the warmest of welcomes in Philadelphia. The standing ovation for Rhys Hoskins is a testament to his character.
