97.5 The Fanatic Flyers Roundup: The Owen Tippett Highlight Reel
While the Philly sports world waited for a decision on Nick Sirianni, Owen Tippett and the Philadelphia Flyers shot up the Metropolitan Division standings with a five-game winning streak. Can the fan base finally buy into their playoff chances?
- Saturday 1/13: Flyers 2, Winnipeg Jets 0
- Monday 1/15: Flyers 4, St. Louis Blues 2
- Thursday 1/18: Flyers 5, Dallas Stars 1
Red-Hot Flyers Win 5 in a Row
The Flyers have steamrolled through legitimate Western Conference opponents and bought themselves a cushion in playoff position. Victories over the Jets and the Stars, two contenders in the Central Division, prove the Flyers can hang with the NHL’s top teams. The Orange and Black will face the Colorado Avalanche, the Central’s powerhouse of recent seasons, in a Saturday matinee at the Wells Fargo Center.
Key contributors Sean Couturier and Jamie Drysdale missed two two games each during the streak. However, the Flyers have benefitted from the return of Noah Cates to the lineup.
John Tortorella has nightly decisions to make when putting his lineup together. If players who don’t deserve reduced roles sit out an occasional game as a healthy scratch, it’s a good problem to have that reflects well on roster depth and the collective momentum of the team.
The Owen Tippett Highlight Reel
The lack of top-end talent on the Flyers roster grew into a major topic of conversation during the 2021-22 season. It also became a primary focus of the organizational rebuild under the new front office.
However, the perceived weakness hasn’t kept Tippett from becoming a regular in NHL highlight reels. His goal against the St. Louis Blues on Monday turned some heads, but he somehow outdid himself with a beaty against the Stars on Thursday.

Owen Tippett has scored six goals and added one assist after going scoreless in his previous six games, and John Tortorella spoke about the rhythm of his right winger as a highlight of the winning streak.
“I think he just feels good about his game. (He’s) hitting the net more with his shot. I haven’t seen a goal like that. I’ve seen a lot of good goals. I haven’t seen one of those in quite a while.” -John Tortorella
Tortorella challenged Tippett throughout the 2022-23 season to become more than just a shooter. The former 10th-overall pick developed more of a power game as a driving offensive force on his way to a 27-goal effort. He’s on pace for 33 goals this season.
His hot streak comes just days before Claude Giroux visits Philadelphia with the Ottawa Senators. The Flyers acquired Tippett as the centerpiece of the 2022 trade that sent their former captain to the Florida Panthers.
Flyers Special Teams: Polar Opposite Directions
Brad Shaw has helped the Flyers improve a struggling penalty kill to the top ranking in the NHL this season. His “power kill” has landed seamlessly in two seasons on Tortorella’s staff. However, the top ranking doesn’t fully represent the contributions of a unit on a historic pace in NET PK%.
The Flyers rank 1st in the NHL with a 93.6 Net PK% (which accounts for shorthanded goals rather than just raw success of opposing power plays).

No team has finished a full season with a better rate since the 2011-12 New Jersey Devils
The power play has conversely struggled under Rocky Thompson. The Flyers rank 32nd in the NHL with the man advantage. They also finished in the basement in 2021-22 and Thompson’s first season in 2022-23.
They are the only team in league history to finish 32nd after the recent expansion, and they haven’t finished higher than 14th since Joe Mullen left the staff after the 2015-16 season. An unlikely hero has dragged them out of the futility recently.
Egor Zamula has brought poise to the blue line on the top power-play unit. His role as a distributor helped the Flyers score at least one power-play goal in five straight games through Jan. 13. Morgan Frost has also showcased his skill with a recent hot streak that seems to have caught Tortorella’s eye as much as any stretch in Frost’s career.
Loose Pucks
Tim Saunders and Steve Coates received the Bill Campbell Broadcast Award from the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association on Wednesday. Coastsey handed over the reins as color commentator to Todd Fedoruk this season after a long partnership with Saunders on 97.5 The Fanatic. The 1973-74 Broad Street Bullies received a collective honor while Sean Couturier took home the “Good Guy” award.
Kimmo Timonen also joined The John Kincade Show to discuss the looming Flyers Alumni Game.
The Flyers will play four games in a crowded January schedule before the much-anticipated golden anniversary celebration of the first Stanley Cup in franchise history next weekend.
