Cooney’s Column: With Optimism High, Bob Cooney Finally Gets To Do “W’s & L’s”
While optimism is overflowing when it comes to the beginning of the season for the Philadelphia Eagles, it just wouldn’t be right if we didn’t pose some questions that don’t necessarily have us worried, but ones that need to be discussed. Such as…….
I’m anxious to see what Nick Sirianni is all about. If Shane Steichen is calling plays on Sundays and this team continues to be the run-heavy unit that it was when Steichen took over that role after seven games last seasons, I wonder where the coach is leaving his finger prints. Perhaps it doesn’t matter, and if this team improves on their 9 wins from a season ago and make the playoffs again, this is a moot point. But it’something that will garner my attention all season long.
As will the aforementioned running game. When the Eagles decided to take the ball out of Jalen Hurts’ hand last season, the team went on to win 70 percent of their games. And now, the offensive line is probably even better than it was a year ago as youngsters Jordan Mialata and Landon Dickerson have another full year behind them. But this isn’t a running league. And the suits sitting in the boxes want to see the ball fly and, if we’re being honest, Hurts is still auditioning for the role of franchise quarterback. Something is going to have to be decided here.
In Darius Slay the Birds are blessed with one of the premier corners in the league, but who is going to give him help over the top when needed? In Anthony Harris and Marcus Epps, I would hope to gain more confidence in them as the season moves on, because that would mean that I’ve gained some.
And finally, the man who I feel is on the hottest of hot seats, defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon has plenty of new shiney tools with which to play, but will he figure out exactly how to best use them?
These areas will garner most of my attention this season, as I tend to always lean towards subjects I question rather ones that I feel comfortable with. Oh, and I’m feeling a lot of comfort. To the tune of…
