Saquon Barkley and The Eagles Run All Over The Giants
When the potential of Saquon Barkley signing with the Eagles came up on the Giants off-season version of Hard Knocks, John Mara said he would have “a hard time sleeping” at night if that happened. How do you think the Giants Owner will sleep tonight? He just saw Saquon Barkley run all over his team, ending in a 28-3 Eagles win.
Barkley made it very clear that he had no extra motivation this week. Whether or not that is true doesn’t matter. What does matter is Barkley ran for 176 yards on 17 carries and a TD, over 10 yards a carry. He had runs of 55 yards, 41 yards, and 38 yards. All 3 eventually led to TDs.
You might be saying it is just The Giants. Yes, the Giants are a bad team. But their defense has been good. They came into the game 10th in the league in points allowed per game and yards allowed per game. 28 is the most points any team scored against them this season.
They held the Bengals to 17 points a week ago. The Red Hot Commanders managed just 21 points against them. The Vikings are the only other team to also score 28. The Cowboys and Seahawks scored 20. Good offenses have had a tough time scoring on this team. But the Eagles made it look easy in the final 45 minutes.
Then there was Nick Sirianni. He has been under fire all season long. But he decided to go for it 3 times today. All 3 led to TDs. Two were scored on 4th down, another led to a TD a few plays later. Had he just played it safe, like many people want him to all the time, they would have been up 13-3. It would have wiped 3 TDs off the board, leading to 2 field goals and a punt instead.
Saquon Barkley Was Not The Only Star
The offense was not the only side who showed up. It might be the lowly Giants offense, but the Birds defense had its second straight great performance. They allowed just 3 points and 117 yards. Yes, the Giant’s offense is terrible, but that is still the lowest point and yard total of the season.
The D-Line got after Daniel Jones all game long. Josh Sweat, Nolan Smith, and Bryce Huff all got a sack. Nakobe Dean and Jalen Carter got 2 sacks. Later, when both teams unloaded their benches, Jalyx Hunt got the 1st sack of his career.
Was it vs a banged-up Giants O-Line, that was not exactly playing well even when Andrew Thomas was healthy? Sure. But the Eagles had multiple chances vs banged-up O-Lines earlier in the week. It was a huge storyline going into the Falcons game. The Eagles failed to capitalize in those weeks. So seeing them exploit a bad O-line two weeks in a row, is a great sign for this defense.
A Complete Performance
It was the complete performance fans had been waiting for. Every part of the game clicked. The offense might have gotten off to another slow start, but then they scored 28 over the next 3 quarters. Jalen Hurts might have taken some ill-advised sacks early, but then he delivered a beautiful pass to AJ Brown to get the 2nd TD of the game.
Even the Special Team got in on it, with Cooper DeJean having a 28-yard punt return that set up a TD drive.
This is the type of win that can give you a reason to have hope. Even against a bad team, it is something you can build on. Eagles fans will be able to sleep well tonight. Something you can’t say for John Mara.
