Flyers Defeat Oilers 2-1 In Shootout
By: Haley Taylor Simon
The Flyers came back from All Star break facing a difficult 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders Monday night. The Orange and Black were able to regroup as they faced the Edmonton Oilers last night against one of the best players in the league, Connor McDavid.
Kevin Hayes was able to get the Flyers on the board in the first period giving them an early 1-0 lead. Evander Kane equalized the game for the Oilers in the second getting the puck behind Carter Hart. The intestate of the two teams battling was evident. This lead to a scoreless third period forcing the game to overtime.

The Flyers had multiple opportunities to score in overtime, but it resulted in a scoreless five minutes leading to the dreaded shootout. Philadelphia notoriously has struggled with the shootout for the past couple seasons. Travis Konecny was the only Flyer who didn’t get one in the back of Edmonton’s net, but Frost and Van Riemsdyk did. Hart was able to stop all but one of Edmonton’s shots on goal resulting in another outstanding game by the goalie.

Takeaways
This game was one of the better games the Flyers played in a while, despite the game resulting in overtime. The consistently in energy exuded on ice throughout the whole game is more notable. The trade deadline is quickly approaching and the players who are rumored to be on the chopping block have been stepping up. James Van Riemsdyk, Kevin Hayes, Ivan Provorov, and Travis Konecny have been some of the names circulating in trade rumors. While nothing is confirmed it’s still going to be an intersting month surronding not only the guys named, but the players who struggled this season to see how they react to the possibility of being moved to another team.
There are already trades happening in the NHL and the Flyers are one of the teams that should take advantage of fixing their salary cap issue so they can accumulate stronger talent to help with the rebuild.
