PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - NOVEMBER 21: Avonte Maddox #29 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates against the New Orleans Saints at Lincoln Financial Field on November 21, 2021 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Tim McManus joined Devon Givens earlier today to give his daily update from Eagles training camp. A lot came up. He spoke about Jordan Davis impressing Jason Kelce with how willing to learn he is. Later he also mentioned that Kyzir White stood out as impressive playing on the first team and getting into the backfield. What else did he have to say? Here are a couple of the best quotes from Tim McManus today on The Fanatic.

On Jalen Hurts having a rough day

“It’s not like an uh-oh, but you want more consistent days stacked. The difference between the mid-level quarterbacks, and the high-level quarterbacks in the NFL, is the high-level Qbs, most of their days are good. They aren’t as susceptible to those arrow pointing down days. You don’t make too much of it. You have to take everything for what it is, which is guys running around in shorts. It’s not going to define who Jalen Hurts is, or who he will be this season.”

Tim mentioned it was a bad day overall for the offense. Earlier he mentioned that Jason Kelce called it out himself and said it was payback for the offense having a good day in the prior practice. But as Tim pointed out, it is not a reason to worry yet. It is one practice. And while inconsistency was an issue for Hurts last year, it is hard to say struggling in one day of Training Camp is inconsistent.

On The Eagles CB Situation

“The Eagles have to be feeling good about their Corner situation overall. That’s in large part because of Darius Slay and Bradberry on the outside. But also Maddox settled into that slot corner role really well last year… That’s what he is, the Eagles have come to realize that. And that’s what makes the whole thing tick. When you are talkling about defensive secondary, and how often you are living in the sub-packages you cant look at a slot corner as a non-starter, they are starters.”

It feels like the Eagles took a weakness, and made it a strength. they have two former All-Pros on the outside, and Avonte Maddox in the slot. And as Tim pointed out to Devon, you can’t undervalue the importance of a slot corner in the modern NFL. Maddox played very well out there last year.
