Kincade & Salciunas: Weekdays 6am – 10am

We are here folks. The Major League Baseball All-Star break. Arguably the worst time to be a sports fan as it is the only time in the year when all four major sports are off. It might leave you wanting to scratch your sports fix but with no games, how do you do that?

I am happy to tell you that there are plenty of ways to get your sports fix on streaming services. There are movies and documentaries and even docu-series that you can check out between now and on Friday that should get you through the All-Star break. This list includes Netflix, Cinemax, HBO, Peacock, ESPN+ and Amazon Prime.

So here are some things you can check out during the break!

  • Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators

I dont exactly remember the craze of American Gladiators because I was born in 1989 but I knew enough. Or so I thought. This docu-series on Netflix goes through the creation to ultimately it dying off.

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

  • Race

Race is the true story of Jesse Owens. The movie came out in 2015 and flew under the radar but its a very interesting look at the best American track and field star ever. Jason Sudeikis is very good in this pre-Ted Lasso role

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

  • Fate of a Sport

I played Lacrosse in high school, but have never felt the need to ever truly watch the sport. It doesnt matter. Fate of a Sport is an interesting look at one of the sports all time greats trying to build his own league out of nothing while facing blackballing from his main competitor. Its really compelling whether you like Lacrosse or not.

    AVAILABLE ON ESPN+

  • All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs

Amazon has had success with their “All or Nothing” series with sports like football and soccer but this is their first foray into hockey. Unfortunately it will likely be their last as NHL insiders do not expect teams to want to give Amazon the access that the Leafs allowed. But its an interesting look at a team with high expectations who fell short.

    AVAILABLE ON AMAZON PRIME

  • Shooting Stars

Do you like Lebron? Great! This movie is for you! Do you not like Lebron? Great! This movie isnt exactly about Lebron. Shooting Stars was the name of a book written by local guy Buzz Bissinger. It dives into not just Lebron, but more so the dynasty squad of Lebron and his 4 best friends at St Vincents St Marys. I liked the movie WAY more than I thought because Lebron ended up being a secondary character. It was more about the other guys.

    AVAILABLE ON PEACOCK

  • Borg vs. McEnroe

I dont care about tennis at all and I dont think ive ever sat down to watch a tennis match. But Borg vs. McEnroe is a legendary rivalry that even a non tennis fan knows about and this movie dives into it. Shia LaBeouf is incredible as John McEnroe

    AVAILABLE ON CINEMAX

  • Rush

It seems like the best movies are those that have to do with sports I dont really care about because formula 1 racing isnt in my rotation on TV. But Ron Howard’s “RUSH” is incredible. A true story about the heated rivalry between James Hunt and Nikki Lauder, the action and drama….it was, in my opinion, the best movie of 2013

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

  • Losers

Its all in the title. Losers is a Netflix docu-series that followers the losers. The folks who lost in dramatic fashion. How they dealt with the loss and why they think it happened.

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

  • Champions

Champions was an awesome feel good movie of this year. A down on his luck pro basketball coach is sentenced to community service where hes tasked with teaching a basketball team of special Olympic athletes. The best comparison I can give is its The Mighty Ducks meets The Ringer. You’ll definitely laugh and will feel good afterwards.

    AVAILABLE ON PEACOCK.

  • Last Chance U

If you arent watching Last Chance U….why? I wasnt even going to include this because I feel like most sports fans are dialed into this Netflix series. But our own “Bobby Basketball” (Bob Cooney) hasnt watched it so I included it on the list. Last Chance U has two iterations. The first season followed a JUCO football team. The football version has 4 seasons and covers 3 schools. The basketball version (which I think is the best) has had two seasons. An interesting look into the world of JUCO sports.

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

  • Take Us Home: Leeds United

Take Us Home Leeds was a fascinating look into the world of soccer. A team in the “Championship” (Second tier) trying to make it to the Premier League (top tier). As a VERY casual soccer fan, it was an interesting look into how a team battles for promotion. Think “Welcome to Wrexham” without Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

    AVAILABLE ON AMAZON PRIME

  • The Battered Bastards of Baseball

The Phillies have a AAA team. As does every single major league team. You need a feeder system for the big club. But there was a time where there was a AAA team with zero affiliation to the majors. And this is that fascinating story. A must for baseball fans especailly.

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

  • Home Game

Home game is an AMAZING docu-series about the sports you dont know about. The localized sports that are popular in other countries but basically foreign here. From the “Highland games” in Scottland to the Calcio Storico of Spain. A quasi soccer meets MMA.

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

  • The Scheme

We all know that college athletics is SHADY. But “the Scheme” goes into exactly how it goes down. The scheme focuses on the biggest criminal case in college sports. Paying athletes to go to certain schools before it was legal.

    AVAILABLE ON HBO….SORRY “MAX”

  • Late Life: The Chien Ming Wang Story

“Oh wow! I remember that guy!” At one time Chien Ming Wang was one of the best pitchers in baseball. This documentary doesnt cover that. It covers Chien Ming Wang trying to rehab and recover and work his way BACK into baseball. An interesting look into athletes trying to hang on.

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX

  • Tony Hawk: Until The Wheels Fall Off

I grew up on the Tony Hawk video games. I loved them. The Best skateboarder in the world without a doubt. But this goes into how he became the best in the world. And how he struggled with fame

AVAILABLE ON HB-…MAX! ITS ON MAX

  • Quarterback

You want your football fix? Here it is! Quarterback follows Kirk Cousins, Patrick Mahomes, and Marcus Mariota. The good: Its interesting to see what the Eagles are getting in Mariota. The negative: After the first episode I thought “Oh, Brittany Mahomes isnt that annoying.” but then the second episode came around. So yea, 8 episodes of her. And you may want to skip the final episode if youre an Eagles fan.

    AVAILABLE ON NETFLIX 7/12
