Sixers

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - DECEMBER 20: Joel Embiid #21 and Tyrese Maxey #0 of the Philadelphia 76ers speak during the second quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Wells Fargo Center on December 20, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

It took an extra game, but the Sixers are in the playoffs. They took down the Heat, to clinch the 7-seed. It was not pretty. In fact at times it was incredibly ugly. But a win is a win, and the Sixers emerged victorious.

Up next is the Knicks. They start a 7-game series with New York Saturday Night at Madison Square Garden. Win that, they will be back in familiar territory. The second round of the playoffs. The place they have made it to 5 times in the Joel Embiid era.

First it was the Celtics. A young duo of Embiid and Simmons couldn’t get it done. The next year they fell to the Raptors despite having Jimmy Butler around. They took a year off from the 2nd round for the Bubble year. But after that, they lost to the Hawks in 7 in a series that ended the Ben Simmons era. Then it was the Heat. Most recently, they lost to the Celtics.

This year, if they can beat the Knicks, it would be either the Bucks or the Pacers.

With Embiid, Anything Is Possible

We talk about MVPs. Well, Embiid’s time away from the team may be the best case that he is the league’s Most Valuable Player. When he is on the floor, they are 31-8. Better than any team’s record after 82 games.

Without him, they are 16-27. One of the worst records in the league. Though they did win 3 games in this 8 game-winning streak without him.

They are a team nobody wants to face. With Embiid they have beaten pretty much every good team in the league.

What will the Sixers 15-man roster look like for this playoff run? Who will they be relying on to beat the Knicks, and then for the rest of playoffs?

Here is the Sixers 15-man Roster for the Playoffs:

  • Joel Embiid

    34.7 pts, 11 rebs, 5.6 asts, 1.2 stls, 1.7 blks, 52.9 fg%, 38.8 3pt%, 88.3 ft%

For once, Embiid is healthy, and rested, heading into the playoffs. The fact he didn’t play the final game is a bit concerning. But the Sixers are telling us that is just a precaution. Let’s be optimistic and take them at their word.

Maybe the meniscus injury will be a blessing in disguise. Embiid missed most of the season, and it hurt their seeding. But their path to the Finals is about as ideal as it can be, provided they beat the Heat. Embiid seems to be operating at a very high level despite all that missed time. He is averaging 30.4 points since he came back. Nearly a point per minute.

When Embiid plays, they are the best team in the league. They are 31-8 with him on the floor, which would give the best record in the league. On paper, they can stack up to anyone when he is on the court.

  • Tyrese Maxey

    25.9 pts, 3.7 rebs, 6.2 asts, 1 stls, .5 blks, 44.9 fg%, 37.2 3pt%, 86.9 ft%

Tyrese Maxey might be the best running mate Embiid has ever had. Ben Simmons had huge potential but was too scared to shoot or attack the rim. Harden seemed like the perfect fit, but we saw how selfishly he would dribble out the clock late in games. Maxey is the perfect mix of both aggressive and unselfish.

We have seen recently Maxey is capable of taking over game. He willed them to win that Spurs game. Without that win, they may not be sitting in the playoff seed they are right now.

He credits the time without Embiid for helping him grow as a player.

  • Tobias Harris

    17.1 pts, 6.4 rebs, 3.1 asts, 1 stl, .7 blks, 48.6 fg%, 34.9 3pt%, 87.7 ft%

It feels like Tobias Harris had his worst season yet with the Sixers. But his numbers are all actually up from last year. Is he worth the max contract they gave him? Of course not. And that is the main reason behind many fans ire. He also failed to step up with Embiid out, which only further lends to fans’ frustration.

But he still has value. Not equal value to his contract, but he can help the Sixers. Tobias Harris actually played great defense against Jayson Tatum in the playoffs last year. They are going to need that again at some point. And he still does score 17 points per game.

Then Sixers will be better off when he is off the team and they can use that max contract slot more efficiently. But until his contract is up, he can still help the Sixers.

  • Kelly Oubre Jr

    15.5 pts, 5 rebs, 1.5 asts, 1.1 stls, 0.7 blks, 44.2 fg%, 31.2 3pt%, 75.2 ft%

Oubre might be the best bargain in the NBA this season. Oubre signed with the Sixers on the vet minimum, which was a little over $2 million. But he has shown up and made a big impact for the Sixers.

Something we have consistently complained about the past several seasons is how the Sixers lacked athletic wing players. Oubre finally gives that to them.  And he has done so in multiple ways. Oubre has had to adapt to different roles, and he has run with it. Whichever way they have used him, he gave them good minutes. Now he should play a massive role for them in the playoffs.

  • Nico Batum

    5.4 pts, 4.1 rebs, 2.1 asts, 0.8 stls, 0.6 blks, 45.8 fg%, 39.6 3pt%, 71.4 ft%

Batum’s stats don’t even begin to tell the story of how valuable he is to the Sixers. They may seem unimpressive at first glance. But when you watch the Sixers play, you will see his fingerprints all over the court.

He brings everything PJ Tucker did, i.e. toughness and defense, but also contributes on the offensive end. Not just because he can still hit a 3, but he also is one of the best inbound passers in the league. Something we saw on full display in their recent win over the Spurs.

Tyrese Maxey got and deserves a lot of the credit for this play. But it doesn’t happen without Batum.

  • Kyle Lowry

    8.4pts, 2.8 rebs, 4.5 asts, .9 stls, .3 blks, 45.1 fg%, 41.4 3pt%, 84.8 ft%

Kyle Lowry has been such a blessing for the Sixers. He is giving them all the toughness and on-court leadership they got out of Pat Bev, but with some offensive production to go along with it.

He is not the same guy he once was when he helped the Raptors win an NBA Finals. That is clear. But he still has a lot to offer the Sixers.

For one, a real backup PG for when Maxey isn’t on the court. Not just a guy who will distribute the ball and play defense, but score as well. He is shooting over 40% from 3 since joining the Sixers.

He has been starting for them, even if he is not playing full starter minutes. Will that be the case in the playoffs? Maybe, maybe not. But regardless of whether he starts, or comes off the bench, expect him to get about 28 minutes per game.

  • Buddy Hield

    12 pts, 3.1 rebs, 3 asts, 0.8 stls, 0.4 blks, 42.8 fg%, 38.8 3pt%, 91.3 ft%

It feels like Buddy Hield has been a disappointment with the Sixers. Yet you look, and his numbers are nearly the exact same here as they were with the Pacers before the trade. In truth, it has just been a bit of a down year for him.

But he is still shooting over 38% from 3, and still scoring in the double digits. Maybe he is not the elite shooter they thought they were getting. But he can still help. He looked great against the Nets in the final game, scoring 19 points. He also scored 18 against the Pistons earlier in the week. Maybe he is waking up at the right time.

Buddy is one of the best 3-point shooters from the past several years. If he finds that form, he can make a major difference in the playoffs.

  • Paul Reed

    7.2 pts, 5.9 rebs, 1.3 asts, .8 stls, 1 blk, 54.1 fg%, 37.5 3pt%, 72.3 ft%

Is Paul Reed good enough to hold down the center position if Embiid is out? No. We saw that this year. The struggles of their bigs is one of the primary reasons the team struggled as much as they did with Embiid out.

But we already know that if Embiid isn’t playing, the Sixers can’t win. The question is if Paul Reed is good enough to be the primary backup in the playoffs. I would say yes. As a guy getting 12-14 minutes per game, he actually brings good energy off the bench. His offensive game has improved enough to fill that small role.

He is a bit undersized, and can still get himself into foul trouble. But that matters less when his role is small.

Nick Nurse has shown he has a quick leash with his backup bigs. If Reed is struggling, he will not hesitate to pull him and go with Mo Bamba. So he gets the backup minutes might differ given the matchup, or even on a nightly basis. But Reed will likely get the first shot.

  • Cam Payne

    9.2 pts, 1.8 rebs, 3.1 asts, 0.6 asts, 0.3 blks, 41.2 fg%, 38.8 3pt%, 91.3 ft%

There were times when Embiid was out, that Cam Payne saved the team. There are also times when he hurts them. Payne is inconsistent. Right now, he is in a swoon, and he has seen his minutes plummet. Unless that changes, he may not see much time in the playoffs.

But we have seen him make a difference in games. Sixer might not be where they are were it not for him helping them win some games while Embiid was out.

Maybe he gets hot in one game and they give him minutes. Or maybe he barely breaks the rotation, if at all. But they already got what they needed out of him during the season. And they are deep enough otherwise that they don’t need to rely on him in the playoffs like they had to rely on Georges Niang at times in the past two playoff runs.

  • Ricky Council IV

    5.5 pts, 1.4 rebs, 0.5 asts, 0.3 stls, 0 blks, 48.2 fg%, 35.5 3pt%, 74.6 FT%

The Sixers signed Ricky Council to a real contract just in time for him to be eligible for the playoffs. Before now, he was on a 2-way contract, meaning he could float between the NBA and the G-League. But 2-way players are not eligible for the playoffs. Council made enough of an impact though in his limited role, that they wanted him sitting on the bench come playoff time.

Will he have a big role? Probably not. What Nurse might do is deploy him in specific situations. We have seen him in limited minutes make a difference on some nights. Including with this insane pass that set up a Batum 3, that helped them beat the Spurs the other night.

  • Mo Bamba

    4.4 pts, 4.1 rebs, .7 asts, .4 stls, 1 blk, 48.7 fg%, 39.7 3pts%, 68 ft%

There will be nights where Mo Bamba barely plays, there will be nights where Bamba gets the bulk of the backup minutes. Like I already said, Nurse plays it by ear. It is usually Reed. But if Reed struggles on a night, or with a matchup, Nurse is willing to adapt and swap in Bamba that night instead.

I’d imagine it will be the same in the playoffs. Reed will be the primary backup. But we might see Mo Bamba here and there as needed.

  • Jeff Dowtin Jr

    4.5 pts, 1.6 rebs, 2.4 asts, 0.4 stls, 0.1 blks, 44.4 fg%, 50 3pt%, 75 ft%

The Sixers went through a few 10-day contracts while Embiid was out, and they tried to overcome other injuries. Dowtin was the guy who finally convinced them to turn that 10-day into a real contract.

Will he be part of their playoff rotation? No. But the deal gives them a club option for next year, so it is about keeping him for their rotation next year. Dowtin has impressed in a limited role. In terms of being one of the last guys off the bench, he is a nice guy to have around. Maybe next year he can expand that role.

  • KJ Martin

    3.7 pts, 2.2 rebs, 0.9 asts, 0.4 stls, 0.2 blks, 53.6 fg%, 28.6 3pt%, 53.7 FT%

Martin came over to the Sixers in the Harden deal, along with Batum, Robert Covington, and Marcus Morris. Early on, he never really cracked the rotation though.

But of late, he has gotten more minutes. In April he averaged nearly 20 minutes per game. But he likely will lose those in the playoffs.

As we all know, rotations get shortened in the playoffs. And even though he gave them good minutes, he will likely be the odd man out on the wing.

  • Robert Covington

    4.5 pts, 3.4 rebs, 0.7 asts, 1.3 stls, 0.6 blks, 44.9 fg%, 35.4 3pt%, 97.5 ft%

Covington hasn’t played since December. It has felt at times he was close to coming back, but he never did. It feels unlikely the playoffs will be the time they try to work him back in. Maybe later on, if they go on a run, and are confident he is up to speed. But more thank likely, Covington wont be a major part of their playoff lineup.

  • De'Anthony Melton

    11.1 pts, 3.7 rebs, 3 asts, 1.6 stls, 0.4 blks, 41.0 fg%, 36 3pt%, 83.5 ft%

Melton just can’t stay healthy. Just when it seemed like he was back, and could play a part, he goes down again. The Sixers will keep him around but don’t expect to see him on the floor. At least not in the first round.
