LIVE BLOG: 2024 Masters Day 2 Coverage at Augusta National

Day 2 of the Masters is going to present an interesting balance for everyone. So we’re going to take it head-on.

Normally we would call this our Round 2 coverage, but today presents BOTH the completion of Round 1, and the start of Round 2.

The first golfers on the course today will be the 30 or so golfers who are completing Round 1. They are on holes 12 through 18 currently.

The next batch of golfers will be the start of Round 2 at around 8 a.m., from the 1st tee like normal. That’ll make the leaderboard look weird as they navigate golfers in different positions.

We start the day with Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler sitting firmly on top. We won’t see them until after noon today. Nicolai Højgaard and Max Homa are the notable golfers in the late portion of their first rounds that are high on the leaderboard. They are at 5-under and 4-under respectively.

Most golfers who didn’t finish yesterday are going to have about 1 hour between the end of their first round and start of their second round today. Once everyone is finished, the Top 50 and ties will get to come back for the weekend at The Masters.

Buckle up, it’s going to be a long day at Augusta National.

  • 8 p.m. - And That's a Wrap for Day 2

    It’s been a long day of golf at The Masters. With first rounds being completed starting at 7:50 a.m., and a slow, plodding second round, 12 hours of golf later, we’re done here.

    We’ve got a race going into the weekend. A legit one. There are three golfers tied at 6-under in the lead. Max Homa, Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler all survived their second rounds (mostly) unscathed.

    Two shots back is Nicolai Hojgaard, playing in his first-ever Masters. The young Dane showed composure, but bogeyed the final two holes.

    Cameron Davis and Colin Morikawa are both at 3-under. Morikawa with the best round among the leaders, with a 2-under 70.

    We’ll be back at it Saturday morning, probably around 10:45 a.m. or so (tee times will be announced shortly). Thanks for sticking with us today.

    Oh, and yes, Jon Rahm did make the cut. Wyndham Clark did not. He barely missed his birdie putt on 18. Heartbreaking.

  • 7:45 p.m. - Wyndham Dies a Hero

    Wyndham Clark held the fate of 11 other golfers entirely in his hands here in the final holes of the second round.

    With 49 golfers at 5-over or better, the cutline that brings the top 50 and ties into the weekend, was sitting at 6-over, where 12 golfers stood, including Clark.

    If Clark could get to 5-over, he would be the 50th golfer into the weekend, and the 6-overs would finish packing.

    But as he played the final two holes, things unraveled. A long putt to get him to 5-over was well short. His next putt also missed. He fell to 7-over with one hole to play.

    Barring a miracle eagle on 18, the group of 11 others all get to play the weekend, while Clark will head home.

    “You either die a hero, or live long enough to become a villain.”

  • 7:30 p.m. - Cutline Moves!

    Some wild shifting here at the end of the second round, as the cutline just dropped yet another shot. It now looks like anyone at 6-over or better will make the weekend.

    That’s great news for Hideki Matsuyama, who double-bogeyed the 18th just now, to finish right on that cut number.

    It also brings Rickie Fowler back into the weekend. We spoke his doom too soon, apparently.

    Some 12 golfers had to change their plans for the weekend with that cutline drop, including Wyndham Clark, who is trying his best to stay in with 2 holes to play.

  • 7:15 p.m. - Rickie Misses

    Barring something mind-blowing, Rickie Fowler has missed the cut at The Masters. He finished his round with a par on 18, needing a birdie. He’s 6-over, with little shot of the cut line moving off of 5-over. The curse of the Par 3 Tournament winner lives on.

    Jon Rahm rattled off birdies on 15 and 16, and is nicely positioned at 4-over, and should play the weekend. (Well, he just bogeyed 17, so maybe not…)

    But while we weren’t looking, Justin Thomas and Wyndham Clark got themselves in trouble.

    Thomas was at even-par before a double-bogey on 15. He followed that with ANOTHER double on 16. And just to make it scarier, he had a bogey on 17. He’s now 5-over, playing the 18th.

    Clark was even par through 5, but back to back bogeys put him to 2-over. Then back-to-back bogeys AGAIN on 9-10 got him to 4-over. Another bogey on 14 and 15 has him at 6-over with three to play.

    Viktor Hovland wobbled back to 6-over with a careless bogey on 14 and on 15. Obnoxious, but not impossible to overcome. Except… he missed a short par putt on 16, and then carelessly tapped his bogey putt past the hole. The double-bogey takes him to 8-over and is essentially done.

  • 6:45 p.m. - Rahm Watch

    With most everyone just trying to grind out the final few holes of the second round, attention turns to those on the cutline. That includes defending champion Jon Rahm.

    As we type, the cut is projected to cum at those 5-over and better. Three players are on that number exactly and still on the course – Joaquin Niemann, Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland.

    Rahm started his day at 1-over, but went the wrong direction quickly. A birdie just now at 15 was much-needed and has him in the weekend for now.

    Niemann entered today at 2-under and fell apart on the back 9, where he’s 5-over on the 18th.

    Hovland entered the second round at 1-under and a bogey on 1, a triple on 2, and a double on 4 quickly unraveled his day. He did just birdie 13 to get back into the weekend for now.

    Rickie Fowler is the only golfer at 6-over on the course, as he plays 18, needing a birdie to have a shot at the weekend.

  • 6:15 p.m. - Tension and Trouble

    As shadows grow long on the course at Augusta National, Scottie Scheffler has the world in front of him. And it’s creating some tension.

    First, Bryson DeChambeau finished his round with a 1-over, 73. He’s 6-under for the tournament, tied for the clubhouse lead at the moment with Max Homa. A frustrating bogey at 18 may be a shot Bryson regrets for a long, long time.

    Back to Scheffler, after a birdie at 10 got him to 7-under, he’s had a couple of pars to calm him down. But an inexplicable shot into the creek in front of the green on the par 5 13th hole has him in trouble. He needed a solid up-and-down from the drop just to save bogey.

    It’s back to a tie on top.

  • 5:30 p.m. - Take Up Thy Cross

    At the risk of a touch of blasphemy, the jokes are just writing themselves after Bryson DeChambeau picked up this fallen sign to move it.

  • 5:20 p.m. - Don't Doubt the Wind

    If you haven’t been watching, and you doubt just how windy it is, take a look at these pictures.

  • 5 p.m. - Nobody Running Away

    The wind today has accomplished one big thing for everyone that ends up making the cut – it’s kept things close.

    Nobody has managed to run away from the field, as our leaders are essentially right where they started the day.

    So the way things stand now, with DeChambeau and Scheffler both sitting at 7-under in the final few holes, everyone in the field will be within 11 shots of the lead (assuming the cut line stays at 4-over). That may sound like a lot, but it’s really not given how much can go wrong at Augusta National.

    The top nine scores on the leaderboard right now range from 2-under to 7-under. Everyone there is in play.

  • 4:15 p.m. - Bryson Taking Charge

    Once again, Bryson DeChambeau (it’s fun to type his full name) is making things looks relatively easy.

    Back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13 have him two shots up on Max Homa, and three up on Scottie Scheffler.

  • 4 p.m. - Tiger Does It!

    There has never been someone who has played on as many weekends in a row at Augusta National than Tiger Woods*.

    With an even-par round of 72, Woods finished at 1-over, which right now is easily within the cutline. Particularly given the ridiculous wind on the course right now.

    His last missed cut was his second time playing the Masters. Since then, he’s owned the course.

  • 3:50 p.m. - Watching the Cut Line

    As the afternoon starts to stretch on, it’s starting to look that the cut line is going to fall at around 4-over or 5-over.

    As we sit, everyone 4-over and better will play for the weekend, putting Vijay Singh, Jon Rahm and others in for the weekend. For now.

    On the wrong side of the line, however, are J.T. Poston, Rickie Fowler, Viktor Hovland (who has had a MISERABLE second round, with a bogey, a triple, a par, a double, and a bogey on his card), Jordan Spieth, Charl Schwartzel, Dustin Johnson and more.

    But Tiger Woods… he’s looking pretty safe, minus a disaster. He’s 1-over playing the 18th. So the record for consecutive cuts made is about to be his.

  • 3:30 p.m. - Augusta National Strikes Back

    Where Augusta National Golf Club gave so many opportunities to score yesterday, it’s gobbling every one of those right back today.

    With heavy winds, sunny skies, and fast greens, nearly every golfer is just hoping for the best right now.

    Here’s a look at some of the struggles:

    • Max Homa started 5-under. He’s wobbled back and forth a bit, but currently stands at 6-under with two holes to play.
    • Bryson DeChambeau started 7-under. He’s now 6-under through 11.
    • Scottie Scheffler started at 6-under, got to 7-under, gave it right back, and is in trouble on 6 right now.
    • Nicoli Hojgaard started 5-under, went up and down and settled finally at 4-under to be the clubhouse leader.
    • There are countless other similar examples. The wind is getting tricky.

     

  • 2:45 p.m. - And Here's Scottie

    It didn’t take long before Scottie Scheffler put himself on top of the leaderboard. On the relatively easy-scoring second hole, Scheffler got a birdie to put himself at 7-under.

    Around the same time, Bryson DeChambeau got a stroke back with a birdie on 7. He’s tied on top.

    Max Homa lost a shot on the 11th, but has maintained at 6-under through 14.

  • 1:45 p.m. - Crowded Up Top

    Well, well, well. Things have gotten very interesting at the top of the leaderboard, as we now have a three-way tie for first.

    Max Homa just bogeyed the 11th hole to drop back to 6-under, not long after Nicolai Højgaard birdied the 14th hole to move UP to 6-under.

    Bryson DeChambeau has three-straight pars, and is sitting at 6-under as well.

    And they have company coming, as Scottie Scheffler is about to start his round, also tied at 6-under.

    There’s a 3-shot gap back to Cameron Davis at 3-under after that though. This afternoon could get interesting.

    On the Tiger Woods front, he’s gone back and forth, but now sits at 1-over, comfortably inside the projected cut line. For now, anyway.

  • 1:10 p.m. - Bryson Stumbles

    We finally have our first wobble from Bryson DeChambeau, and it’s enough to take him out of the lead of the Masters.

    DeChambeau had pars on his first three holes to start Round 2, but a costly mistake on 4 left him with a short bogey.

    He’s nos 6-under for the tournament, and one back of Max Homa, who just keeps making pars. He’s at 7-under after a 2-under front 9.

  • 12 p.m. - Bryson on the Course

    The afternoon holds a lot more promise for us for some interesting play, as our co-leader Bryson DeChambeau is now on the course.

    He blistered his opening drive down the fairway. With Max Homa making par on five and six, he’s tied at 7-under, giving Bryson something to aim for.

    Scottie Scheffler won’t be out until 1:48 p.m.

  • 11:45 a.m. - Tiger and the Cutline

    Tiger Woods has an obscene 23 consecutive cuts made at The Masters. Obviously, Augusta National has been his own personal playground for most of his career.

    But that was then, and this isn’t a normal Tiger.

    After back-to-back bogeys on 4 and 5, he now sits at 2-over for the tournament. The cutline is a bit shaky at the moment, as a lot of players still have to start their second rounds. But as it stands, it’s around 3-over or 4-over.

    That means Tiger has very little wiggle room for the rest of the day. The Top 50 and ties make the cut, and if Tiger wants the record of 24 straight cuts at The Masters, he’s got work to do.

  • 11:25 a.m. - Yeah, Max Is Dialed In

    We don’t want to necessarily KEEP talking about Max Homa, but he just had an improbable birdie on the fourth hole, and he’s now tied for the lead at 7-under.

    Playing partner Tiger Woods bogeyed the same hole after a birdy on three. He’s back to 1-over for the tournament.

  • 11:10 a.m. - Amateur? Yeah right.

    Neal Shipley is an amateur, and he’s making his first Masters appearance. It doesn’t really feel like it though.

    Shipley had a solid 1-under, 71 in his first round, with three birdies and two bogeys. His second round has seen much of the same, with two birdies and two bogeys on the front 9. That’s good enough to be 1-under, and easily in the projected cutline for the weekend.

    He’s also three shots clear of the next closest amateur, Christo Lamprecht, who hasn’t started his second round yet.

    And if you’re looking for a winner of this tournament right now, remember that for the last 19 years, the winner of the tournament was in the Top 11 after the first round.

    That means your winner is likely going to be one of these golfers:

  • 11 a.m. - MAX!

    Another hole, another birdie for Max Homa. He’s now tied for second at 6-under through two holes in his second round.

    On the other end of the spectrum, Brian Harman had about the worst possible end to his first round you could have. His back 9 went par-bogey-bogey-double-par-par-triple-double-double.

    Finished the round with a 9-over, 81. He did start his second round with a par, so at least he has that going for him.

  • 10:45 a.m. - On to Round 2

    After a technical delay on our end, we’re back and we’ve moved on completely to the second round at Augusta National.

    Tiger Woods is even through the first hole, but 1-over on the round still.

    Cameron Davis has had the biggest adventure in the second round so far, going par-birdie-par-par-par-birdie-double bogey-birdie-bogey on his front nine. Just your standard 36. He’s 3-under overall.

    Our leader Bryson DeChambeau tees off at 11:54 a.m. and Scottie Scheffler heads out at 1:48 p.m.

    Nicolai Højgaard and Max Homa are both 5-under overall, through four and one holes respectively.

  • 9:45 a.m. - Oh Jordan

    Jordan Spieth has three 9s on a scorecard in his career. And two of those three have come on the 15th hole at Augusta National during the Masters.

    He’s the only person to do that in the last 20 years, so at least it’s a record, right?

  • 9:30 a.m. - Curse of 18

    Both Tiger Woods and Max Homa learned the hard way that 18 at Augusta National is an unusual beast sometimes.

    For Tiger, a bogey on the last hole of his first round left him 1-over overall. He’ll need a better second round if he has any hopes of making the weekend. He will tee off in just 48 minutes at 10:18 in the second round.

    Max Homa also got a bogey on his card at 18, but he’s in a better place, at 5-under after his first round, which is good for a tie for third place.

  • 9 a.m. - Max Making Moves

    With a birdie on 16, Max Homa has moved into a tie for second place, with room for more. He then hit his shot from the fairway on 17 to one inch from the hole. That gave him another birdie, and the tie with Scottie Scheffler.

  • 8:55 a.m. - Jason Day's Fashionable Day

    Jason Day is all the talk on social media this morning, with an outfit you just have to see to believe.

    The Masters - Round One

  • 8:30 a.m. - DeChambeau Making Headlines

    Bryson DeChambeau isn’t even back on the course yet, but he’s already making headlines this morning.

    GolfWeek reported that Bryson is using 3-D printed irons this week, and that they were approved MONDAY by the USGA.

  • 7:45 a.m. - A Windy Day Ahead

    As if the wind yesterday wasn’t tormenting enough, today will see lots of gusts all day long. That means everyone is going to have to face it.

    Will it present a challenge for golfers who played strong enough through it? That remains to be seen.

  • 7:30 a.m. - Second Round Hole Locations

    We’re not even done with Round 1 yet, but since Round 2 will also begin concurrently, we have to watch both this morning.

    The hole locations for Round 2 have been released, and there are some tricky placements today.
