PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - DECEMBER 29: Quinyon Mitchell #27 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks on before the game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field on December 29, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The divisional round is set. It will be Eagles vs Rams, In Philly, at 3 pm on Sunday. The Rams, even while displaced from their usual home field, sent the Vikings packing fairly easily, to set up a rematch from the Week 12 Clash back in November.

That 1st matchup was all Eagles. The Eagles won 37-20, and honestly, it was a bigger blowout than that. The Rams scored a completely meaningless TD in the final minute of the game, and before that drive, they held the Rams to just about 230 yards and 13 points. After the Rams racked up 123 yards on their first two drives of the game, the Rams managed just 118 yards on their next 7.

The Eagles’ offense meanwhile had their way. They didn’t even have their usual slow start. Saquon Barkley tore the Rams apart, with 255 yards and 2 TDs. He had 9.8 yards per carry. The Eagles had no DeVonta Smith, but AJ brown still racked up 109 yards and a TD.

So will this week be a repeat? Do they just have the Ram’s number? Yesterday we looked at the offenses, now let’s look at the defenses.

Both of these teams sport a young defense that has at times carried them. The Eagles have two rookie corners, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, and a young D Line led by guys like Jalen Carter (2nd Year), Nolan Smith (2nd Year), and Jordan Davis (3rd Year).

Then you have the Rams who have a young D Line who just sacked Sam Darnold 9 times, led by guys like Jared Verse, Brandon Fiske, Kobie Turner, and Byron Young.

But while the Rams’ defense has shown great promise, and has come on very strong, the Eagles’ young defense has been great all season. They are number 1 in yards allowed per game, and number 2 in points allowed per game. But which defense is more talented?

Let’s Break Rams Vs Eagles Down Position By Position:

  • D-Line- Eagles

This was the toughest one to call. It is very close. You have Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams, and Josh Sweat, along with some solid role players like Moro Ojomo, Jalyx Hunt, and Thomas Booker, vs the group of young Rams’ Linemen we mentioned earlier.

They have about the same pressures. The Rams linemen had 305 pressures from their linemen, and the Eagles had 291, but the Rams also had more snaps. The Eagles had 33.5 sacks from their linemen, and the Rams had 33. It is very close to which D-Line gets after the QB better. Rams might have a slight edge, but it is razor-thin.

The difference comes down to each team’s ability to stop the run. The Rams are 11th in run-stop win rate, and the Eagles are 3rd. Both teams stop the run well, but the Eagles are the best run-stopping team in the league. The linebackers, who we will get to, get a ton of credit for that, but so does the D-Line.

    Advantage- Eagles

  • Inside Linebacker- Eagles

Were Nakobe Dean healthy, this one would be Eagles by a mile. But his injury does complicate things slightly. That said, Oren Burks is an experienced Linebacker who has more experience starting playoff games than many other Linebackers on the field for this game. And Zack Baun was the best LB in the whole league this season.

The Rams have Omar Speights and Christian Rozeboom. Speights is decent against the run and sometimes vulnerable in coverage, Rozeboom is vulnerable on both ends. Rozeboom is responsible for over 600 yards through the air this season, and 4 TDs. Even with having to patch and play, the presence of Zack Baun gives the Eagles a much better LB group than the Rams have.

Baun has a real case to be DPOY. He likely won’t win it, cause it rarely goes to Inside Linebackers, but you can argue he was the best defensive player this season. he led all LBs in stops, tackles, and forced fumbles, while also being 5th in sacks.

    Advantage- Eagles

  • Cornerback- Eagles

The Eagles give up the fewest passing yards per game, despite having a lot of games where they were way ahead and teams had to throw a lot. The Rams are 19th. The Eagles give up the least yards per attempt at 6 yards, the Rams give up 7.6 yards per attempt, which is 24th in the league.

Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper Dejean, and Darius Slay are arguably the best CB trio in the league. Darious Williams, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Quentin Lake can’t compete.

    Advantage-Eagles

  • Safety- Eagles

CJ Gardner Johnson has gotten beaten a few times. He has given up 7 TDs. But he has also given up just 23 catches and 248 yards. On top of that, he is 3rd in the league with 6 interceptions and forced a fumble. Reed Blankenship has 4 interceptions and has given up only 1 TD. On the other side, Kamren Kinchens and Kamren Curl have given up 10 TDs and only have 4 combined picks.

Like with the Corners, this one isn’t close. The Eagles pass defense all around is better than the Rams pass defense.

    Advantage- Eagles
