PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - OCTOBER 22: General Manager of the Philadelphia Eagles Howie Roseman looks on prior to a game against the Miami Dolphins at Lincoln Financial Field on October 22, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Eagles’ off-season started this year earlier than we hoped it would. After going all the way to the Super Bowl last year, they could not make it past the first round this time. And in the weeks that have passed since their loss, they have already taken care of some business. They are currently sorting out their coaching staff. That started with keeping Nick Sirianni but bringing in Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore as their new coordinators. But the offseason can’t properly begin until the actual season ends with the Super Bowl.

This off-season will need to be a busy one for the Eagles. They came up short in part because of how poor their roster construction the previous off-season was. They let the wrong guys leave and kept guys we now see they should have let walk.  And if things are going to get better, Howie Roseman needs to step his game up. The defense in particular needs a ton of work. They can not come into next season with the same secondary and linebacker group they had for 2023. And that means nailing both free agency and the draft.

Here is a peak at what the Eagles may need to do this off-season:

So when does free agency start? When is the combine? And when is the draft? Let’s look at all the important dates for the Eagles.

Here are the 9 dates every Eagles fan needs to know for the upcoming off-season:

  • February 20th- March 5th- Period Teams Can Use The Franchise Tag

Starting on February 20th, teams can start using their franchise tag. In the Eagles case, they don’t exactly have any candidates they would consider using the tag on. In fact, they haven’t used the tag on a player since 2012. It is just not how they tend to do business. But there are several notable pending free agents the Eagles may be interested in that could be tagged. Notably Antoine Winfield. So while we won’t need to watch out for who the Eagles tag, the way other teams use their tags could impact the Eagles’ plans.

  • February 27-March 4- NFL Scouting Combine

At the end of February, and into the start of March, the Combine takes place. It is the unofficial start of Draft Season. Teams get to not only see players work out, but it is one of the first chances they get to really sit down and talk to players. And it can have a real impact on where players get drafted. Every year there will be a few guys who suddenly shoot up the draft boards because of how impressive their workout is. Likewise, we have seen guys fall down the boards because they had a poor showing. Kyle Hamilton is an example of a player who had a disappointing combine and then fell lower than maybe people thought he would.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA - MARCH 03: Defensive back Sydney Brown of Illinois participates in a drill during the NFL Combine during the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on March 03, 2023 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • March 7th- Pro Days Begin

The combine is not the only chance players get to work out for teams though. Following the combine, every school hosts their own pro day. Those will start on March 7th, but every school is different, and some will run into April. It’s a chance to get perhaps a closer look at the players.

  • March 7-April 26- Teams Can Conduct In Person And Telephone Interviews With Draft Eligible Players

Starting March 7th, NFL teams can start conducting interviews with players. But there are rules to how many players you can talk to. Teams are only allowed to host 30 players in their facilities. And they are not allowed to conduct private workouts with them, only physicals. They can host telephone and video interviews with more than that. But only 3 times per player, and for no more than 1 hour per interview.

  • March 11-13- Legal Tampering Period

Legal Tampering is one of the dumbest terms in sports. Those two words literally contradict each other. But it is the unofficial start to free agency. Teams can talk to player’s agents, and agree in principle to a deal. But nothing is official until free agency begins and they can sign a contract. Most times the deals happen as agreed to during the tampering period. But there is of course the infamous Frank Gore deal with the Eagles that fell through.

  • March 13- Free Agency Officially Begins

At 3 P.M on March 13th, those deals can become official. So there will be no more backing out of deals like Frank Gore did. The Eagles have decent cap space, with the chance to open up much more. And their focus should probably be on fixing their defense. There are some decent linebackers and defensive backs out there.

  • April 25-27- 2024 NFL Draft

And then of course there is the draft itself. Detroit is hosting it this season, and the day takes place on April 25th. The Eagles have pick 22, two 2nd-round picks (theirs and the Saints), a compensatory 3rd-round pick, and then 4 5th-round picks. Howie has been better at drafting of late. But this season more than ever, they need to nail the draft if they are going to field a competitive defense again next season.

  • May 2: Deadline To Exercise 5th-Year Options For Players Drafted in 2021

Players selected in the first round of the draft have a 5th-year option built into their contract. Teams have until May 2nd to exercise that option for players drafted in 2021. In the Eagles case, that applies to Devonta Smith. One of the things have to do this off-season is sign Smith to a new contract. If they do before May 2nd, they won’t need to use their option. But if it drags on, they will exercise the option.

  • June 1st- Any Cut Or Trade After This Date Spreads The Dead Cap Over Two Seasons

You have probably heard the term “cut with a post-June 1st designation before. What it means is a player cut after that date, has their dead cap hit spread over two seasons. James Bradberry for instance would carry a $17 million cap hit if cut before June 1st. If he is cut after it, it is $4.7 million in 2024 and about $12 million in 2025. They don’t actually need to hold onto him until that date. He can be let go before it, with a post 6/1 designation. How does that make sense? No clue. But it could be relevant for several Eagles players, most notably Bradberry.
