SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - DECEMBER 28: Joel Embiid #21 of the Philadelphia 76ers celebrates a play during the first half of a game against the Utah Jazz at Delta Center on December 28, 2024 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

It was not the start to the Sixers season anyone wanted. After going out and acquiring Paul George, along with several role players, the Sixers’ first couple of months were a disaster. The word disaster here is not hyperbole. They were one of the worst teams in the country, finishing November with a 4-14 record.

Joel Embiid missed a ton of time as he ramped up from the knee injury he was still recovering from. In fact, he played in just 4 games during that 4-14 stretch. Paul George played in just 9 after he suffered an injury in preseason. Tyrese Maxey, not wanting to be different from the group missed 6 of those 18 games. Caleb Martin missed time too, and Jared McCain, who looked poised to be Rookie of the Year, had his season derailed by a torn meniscus. It felt like the whole season was cursed.

But lo and behold, things have turned around. After entering the month 4-14, the Sixers will ring in the New Year 13-17. Still not great, but a hell of a lot better than where they were. They closed things out with a decisive 125-103 win over the Trail Blazers.

Embiid is looking more like his usual self, Maxey has found his groove, and the team defense has been fantastic. After there were calls in November for them to forget this season, and tank for Cooper Flagg, the Sixers now find themselves back in the mix.

There is still work to do. They have not dug themselves out of the hole yet and things will start to get harder as the season goes on. But a weak Eastern Conference, outside the top 3 or so teams, and a resurgent December has them looking like the team we thought we might see when they signed Paul George this offseason.

But how much stock should we put in this hot streak? Is it for real, or are they just beating up on bad teams?

These 5 Numbers Should Convince You The Sixers Are The Real Deal

  • 0.92

With the slow start, and all the missed games, there were concerns that Embiid was finally regressing. December showed that was not the case. Embiid played in 7 games this past month. He left one early with a sinus fracture and was ejected from another. But in total, he played 197 minutes. In those minutes, he scored 182 points.

That is .92 points per minute. For reference only 1 player, Giannis Antetokounmpo, averages more points per minute this season. Embiid has been efficient too, shooting 48.4% from the field, and 40% from 3. He looks like his usual self. Even with the facemask, he is back to dominating. Yes, the competition has not exactly been tough, but he did score 27 in 31 minutes vs the Celtics.

The goal is just health. Which with Embiid is always a problem. But any rumors of his regression were exaggerated. He is still one of the best scorers in the league.

  • .769

The Sixers had a winning % of .176 over the first 17 games. As bad as it gets. What have they done since then? Only rattled off 10 wins in 13 games. A winning record of .769. How big of a swing is that? .176 is the 3rd worst record in the league. .769 is the 3rd best. Only the Cavs and the Thunder have a better record.

Obviously it is a small sample size, and most of the competition was not exactly tough. But the sample size is only a bit smaller than the start of the season that had people panicking. Plus they did beat the Celtics, and the Spurs are no pushovers now. Also, they lost to some bad teams earlier in the season, so no matter which way you slice it, they have been much better.

The goal is to avoid the play in tournament. Too much can go wrong in 1 game that you do not want to settle for the 7th or 8th seed. Besides, you also dont want to play the Celtics or Cavs in round 1.

The good news is, despite the terrible start, the Sixers are within reaching distance of the 6 seed. As it sits on Dec 31st, they are 3 games back from the Bucks for the 6-seed, and only 3.5 games back from the Hawks for the 5 seed. You can easily see a world where by February 1st they are not only in a playoff spot but outside of the play-in.

The Sixers are lucky that the East is so thin. The Hawks are .545 and in the 5 seed. .545 would have been the 10 seed in the East last year. The other teams in this conference were struggling right alongside the Sixers. Maybe not quite as much, but enough to make the Sixers’ hole not as deep as it should have been.

As it currently stands, 45 wins will be enough for the Sixers to avoid the play-in. The Sixers need to play .615 basketball the rest of the way to make that happen. Not easy, but way easier than it should be after how bad they were to start the season.

We keep saying the schedule will get harder. And that is true. But not yet. In fact the next 6 games are more of the same. They play the Kings, Warriors, Nets, Suns, Wizards, and Pelicans. Those teams are a combined 67-124. A winning record of .345.

The Suns have the best record of the group, and they are 16-16. Those teams are actually playing even worse of late. Their combined record in their past 10 games is 16-37, and no one is better than 4-6.

The Sixers will have a chance to keep racking up wins. Win all 6, you will be 19-17, and that will be good enough to be the 8 seed.

Tyrese Maxey was not himself to start the season. He was scoring points, but he was incredibly inefficient. He shot under 40% in his first 10 games. Those struggles carried over a little bit into December. But clearly getting Embiid back on the floor, and getting consistent playing time with him and Paul George, has unlocked the Maxey we are used to.

In the last 10 games, he is not only 27.3 points per game, he is shooting 44.4% while doing so. He is shooting 39.2% from 3 over the last 10 games 2. He shot 29.2% from 3 in his first 10 games. Oh, and he is also averaging 6.1 assists and 4.1 rebounds in the last 10 games.

He was forcing things when he was on his own. Teams were also focusing on him. It took its toll. But now that Embiid is back, teams can’t do that, and there is less pressure on Maxey to take over the game.

He was especially good this past week, scoring 32.3 per game, and winning player of the week.
