BALTIMORE, MD - AUGUST 09: Tanner McKee #16 of the Philadelphia Eagles looks to pass against the Baltimore Ravens during the second half of a preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium on August 9, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland.

A few weeks into training Camp, the various battles are becoming quite clear. Especially now that they have also played 2 pre-season games. The Eagles do not have to make their cuts just yet. But they likely have a very good idea of who they are keeping, and who they are going to move on from.

That also goes for some of the various battles for roles on the team. Nick Sirianni won’t say it, but by seeing how players are used in the games, and used in practice, we can tell where they are leaning at battles like Cornerback, Wide Receiver, Right Guard, linebacker, etc.

If they are someone who barely played in that 2nd pre-season game, you can take that as your sign they are in a good spot. Meanwhile, if they are still out there in the 4th quarter, it may not mean great things for them when final decisions are made. Once you get to that final game, decisions have already likely been made.

The same goes for practice. Who is getting the bulk of the 1st team snaps at this point? Who is only playing with the 3rd stringers? That will tell you way more than looking at the “official depth chart” will. The coaches let us know which way they are leaning, without ever having to open their mouth.

Who has already won themselves a job? Which players could be on the outs with the team? Who already won their camp battle? And who will go into the final weeks of Eagles Training Camp fighting for their life? Lets look at the winners, and losers, so far at Eagles Training Camp, as we get closer to the eventual cutdown to 53 players.

Here are 11 Winners and Losers From Eagles Training Camp So Far

  • Winner- Mekhi Becton

At the start of camp, people talked about how Mekhi Becton had a chance to win the job. A few weeks in, he may have already won it. The fact he has barely seen the field in the Preseason games, and Tyler Steen was on the field, tells you everything you need to know. The battle is over, Becton won.  When the Eagles take the field in Sao Paulo in Week 1, it is going to be Mekhi Becton at RG, barring injury.

  • Loser- Tyler Steen

If Becton is a winner, that means Tyler Steen is the loser. He entered camp with everyone saying he was the favorite to win. But as camp went on, it was clear he was falling behind. Not because he looked bad, he actually looked decent despite battling an ankle injury. Becton was just better. Now that Steen’s ankle injury seemed to get worse in the 2nd pre-season game, it is safe to say we can call this battle for Becton.

But Steen does deserve credit for playing some tough snaps with that injury. He showed some good stuff, especially as a run blocker.

  • Winner- Johnny Wilson

Whether or not Wilson won himself a real role remains to be seen. From what we have heard, the Eagles WR3 might not be on the roster yet. But Wilson has definitely given himself a great chance to make the team. Not just because he looked good catching the ball in camp, though he did look good for a 6th round rookie. But because he did the little things. He was a great blocker in the first game. That more than any amount of catches, will give him a great chance to make the roster.

The concussion that forced him to miss game 2 will likely prevent him from winning the slot WR job. That was a longshot anyway. But when healthy, he did  a lot to improve his stock.

  • Losers- Parris Campbell and John Ross

The Eagles brought in 2 vets to compete for the WR3 spot. Neither has made a mark. We have hardly heard from either guy. That is not a good sign. There are positions where hearing nothing means they are doing their job. But if a WR is doing his job, it is going to be loud. Now the word is the Eagles may look outside the roster to find their WR3. Tim McManus told the best Show ever that he doesn’t think the WR3 is on the roster yet.

If Parris Campbell or John Ross had a good camp, people would not be saying that. Since they have been quiet, the Eagles might need to make a move. Anias Smith has also been a major disappointment.

  • Winner- Tanner McKee

Tanner McKee has not outperformed the QB 2 for the second straight Preseason. Last year he outplayed Marcus Mariota, but they kept Mariota as the starter. Partly because of what they were paying Mariota, but also because McKee was a rookie. Now he is outplaying Kenny Pickett in the preseason this year. Will he get the QB2 spot?

Probably not. Pickett has not looked good, but he does have experience winning NFL games. And also Eagles did have to trade for him, and that may make them give him a longer leash. But McKee has made it an argument. He might be playing 3rd stringer, but he looks confident out there. he makes the right choices, and can make a lot of the throws. In the case Hurts get hurt, it will likely be Pickett going in. But McKee might have made that leash shorter. If Pickett struggles, McKee might get his chance.

  • Loser- Kenny Pickett

You might be noticing a trend that with every winner, there is a loser. Kenny Pickett has done himself no favors this summer. He has looked a bit lost. He doesn’t have the arm to push it down the field, and he is not efficient enough on short throws to make up for it. Maybe he looks better if throwing to AJ Brown and Devonta Smith, with Kellen Moore unleashing his full offense. But taking out all the other factors, and just evaluating how he looks, he doesn’t fit the mold of an NFL QB.

He is fine as a backup. Most teams do not have viable backups, there aren’t even 32 good starting QBs. He might still be one of the best backup QBs in the league. But we can now see why the Steelers were ready to move on. And there might be a better option waiting behind Pickett.

Warren Sharp on X (formerly Twitter): "in 24 Kenny Pickett starts, he led the Steelers to more than 20 points just 6 times6 times in 24 startsyet somehow, the Steelers went 14-10 in those gamesMike Tomlin is a necromancer / X"

  • Winner- Avonte Maddox

Avonte Maddox might not just make the team as Safety, he could start. Cornerback is very deep. Safety, not so much. He has spent much of camp playing Safety. He got the start there in preseason game 2. I have to say, he looked the part. yes he was playing against backups. But instincts are instincts, and he looks natural out there. The highlight was him jumping a route to pick off a pass intended for Austin Hooper and returning it for 47 yards.

He very well could start there week 1. We know CJGJ will be 1 of the starters. After him… Sydney Brown is injured, Reed Blankenship struggled last year, and we have not heard much out of him in camp. There is not much behind those guys. Even if it is not as the starter, it is easy to see him sticking on the roster as a backup who can also slide into the slot if needed.

I would not have called him a lock at the start of camp. Now? I feel safe putting him on my 53-man roster.

  • Loser- Max Scharping

Max Scharping never had a chance for playing time here. He did however have a chance to be a backup. Giving up 2 sacks in the 2nd preseason game might have ended those hopes. The Eagles are not exactly overflowing with Tackle depth, but they have better options than Scharping given how he looked. And inside, they have a lot of better options.

If he is getting beat by the Patriots backups, he has no chance to survive if he got into a real game. Scharping likely cost himself a job Thursday night.

  • Winner- Will Shipley

Getting playing time is going to be hard for Shipley given he is behind Saquon Barkley and Kenny Gainwell. But man he has looked good in both preseason games. Especially as a pass catcher. He was likely always a lock to make the team given he is a 4th round pick. I am not sure if his good play will earn him more playing time this year. But, he certainly has made us comfortable about his future.

Maybe he does get used for RB screens this year. He has even impressed as a blocker. I would probably say he has been their most impressive player on offense to this point. Gainwell is a free agent after this year. Maybe next year he is Saquon’s main backup.

  • Loser- James Bradberry

I have heard James Bradberry looked good in camp. i am not there, so I can’t say. Vic Fangio did have some praise for him, and Fangio doesn’t praise people just to praise people. But he was noticeably struggling at Safety against the Patriots. Fangio told us that transition to Safety from Corner is hard. It looked it in that game. He was out of place a few times. He fell hard for a fake, giving Drake Maye an easy path into the end zone. He also got beat in coverage a few times.

Safety is not deep, as we said. So maybe he makes it. But Avonte Maddox is definitely ahead of him, as are CJGJ, Blankenship, and Brown. After how bad he struggle last season, having a bad preseason game could bring Bradberry a step closer to getting cut. His saving grace is he fact it is cheaper to keep him. But if he is not the best player, maybe they decide to eat that extra cost.

Dave Zangaro pointed out on The Best Show Ever that Bradberry not playing Special Teams hurts his case even more. If he isn’t a starter, and he does not look any where near ready enough to start, who will you keep, a guy who also cant pay Special Teams, or Tristin McCollum who at least can contribute on Special Teams?

  • Winner- Nakobe Dean and Nakobe Dean

How could they both be winners if they are competing for a job? Good question. You could argue that Dean is a loser since it seems like he won’t be one of the starters. But after he looked pretty good in that second preseason game, it is hard to call him a loser. He has kept himself in the mix in the case Baun struggles.

But speaking of Baun, it looks like he won the job. He came off the field with the other defensive starters in game 2. That tells you which way the Eagles are leaning. They left Dean out there for much longer. Based on everything we have seen, the starters to open the year at Linebacker will be Devon White and Zack Baun. But Dean has helped his case, and might be in that mix as part of a rotation. And he will have the chance to win the job back in the season.
