Truist Championship Embracing ‘Sports Craziness’ in Philadelphia
The Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown will host the Truist Championship from Wednesday, May 7 through Sunday, May 11.
The local market can celebrate landing one of the PGA Tour’s signature events in 2025, and Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square will also host the PGA Championship in May 2026.
When Joie Chitwood, the event’s Executive Director, addressed the media at PCC, he spoke excitedly about the perfect recipe coming together to plan the tournament.
He also made it pretty clear that he knew the market he was speaking to.
“It’s not just going (fans) to a PGA Tour event. You’re going to a Philadelphia PGA Tour event.” -Joie Chitwood
The Truist Championship: A PGA Tour Signature Event
Rory McIlroy won his fourth career Truist Championship in 2024 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina. He’ll defend his title against Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and some of the other top golfers in the world on Mother’s Day weekend.
Chitwood described the opportunity for fans to see the highest-profile participants compete throughout the weekend.
“It’s not just a regular PGA Tour stop. It’s a signature event. It’s the top 70 (golfers) on the PGA Tour competing for a $20 million purse, and there’s no cuts. So you get to see your favorite players all four days (Thursday-Sunday) in what I can only call an intimate experience at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.” -Joie Chitwood
The Philadelphia Cricket Club, a historic course founded in 1854, provides the right challenges for a signature PGA Tour event. The club is also renovating some facilities on property and impressively executing plans to reroute the order of the holes and accommodate the expected crowds.
The festivities will also include a ProAm tournament, the Creator Classic (presented by YouTube), a gathering at the Franklin Institute, and Mother’s Day celebrations.
‘Sports Craziness’ in Philadelphia
Bill Rogers, the CEO and Chairman of Truist, leaned right into idea of fans that liven up sporting events unlike any other market in the United States.
He called Super Bowl LIX the “perfect lead-in” to the Truist Championship to generate excitement within local sports fandom.
“It is great to be in a city that is just steeped in history and tradition. This is a sports town with a passionate fan base. I don’t think anybody in the country misses what an incredible sports town this is… We were all on the sidelines cheering the Eagles as well.” -Bill Rogers
PCC will honor the history and tradition of the city of Philadelphia with uniquely-named spectator locations like Liberty Terrace, Valley Cabins, Forge Cabins, Boathouse Row, Broad Street Suites, and Penn Suites.
“We couldn’t ask for more energy and enthusiasm from the market. It also tells us this is the market to be in – in terms of sports craziness, energy, a club, an event, a partner like Truist – those are the recipes that make truly successful things happen.” -Joie Chitwood
