Eagles Make A Strong Statement In Win Over The Bengals
The start to the Eagles season was a bit uneven. They got an impressive win vs the Packers to open things up, but then blew a win the next week vs the Falcons. They followed up with the defense making a statement down in New Orleans, but then the Bucs embarrassed them the following week in Tampa. It was tough to tell who this team was heading into the bye week.
But coming out of the bye week, and getting healthy started to turn things around. Wins over the Browns and Giants were nice, but not enough to convince some fans that this team was back. But going into Cincinnati, and thumping a tough Bengals team, might do just that. They come back to Philly with a 37-17 win, and a 5-2 record.
The Eagles Offense Lives Up To The Hype
The offense clicked from start to finish. Yes, they technically didn’t score in the 1st quarter, but they did score on the first drive. Then they scored in all but 1 of their drives, including 4 TDs. They scored 37 points and finished with 397 yards.
The Jalen Hurts we saw in 2022 showed up. The actual passing number might not jump off the page, 236 yards and a passing TD. But just like he was last week, he was efficient with the ball and made the passing plays when he had to. On 20 pass attempts, he threw just 4 incompletions. He finished with 4 total TDs, including 2 Tush Push TDs. But the highlight for him, and the Eagles, was his deep TD to DeVonta Smith.
People might say the Bengal defense sucks, and it does. But last week they did this to a stout Giants defense. They put 28 points on them despite pulling the starters in the 4th quarter. That’s now 2 straight games where this Eagles offense dominated.
The Defense Makes Plays When It Needs To
The start of the game for the Eagles defense did not go well. Joe Burrow took them apart with 1000 cuts. Just moving down the field in chunks of 7 to 10 yards. He picked apart the zone defense with ease, taking up 10 minutes to score a TD on the opening drive.
But late in the game, when things were still close, they stepped up. First, it was a big 4th down stop in Bengals territory, thanks to a great tackle by Cooper Dejean. That set up a FG for the Eagles to go up 10.
Then, CJ Gardner Johnson picked off Burrow with the assistance of Isaiah Rodgers. That led to the Eagles 4th TD of the game, and pretty much ended the game. But even then the D wasn’t done. They put the nail in the coffin forcing a fumble to truly seal the win.
By the end, they held a dangerous Bengals offense to just 17 points. Getting stops when it counts is what great defenses do. The Eagles defense in the 2017 Super Bowl got torched all game. But in the biggest drive of the game, they forced a fumble. Meanwhile, the 2022 Eagles defense was among the best in the league all year long. But when it mattered, they couldn’t get a stop to save their lives in the Super Bowl.
It is not how you start, it is how you finish. In the moments when the game was on the line, this defense stepped up and made the plays. They might be young, but they are showing you can count on them when you need to. They have given up just 2 TDs now in the past 3 games.
Eagles Make A Statement
The Bengals at 3-5 may not look like an impressive win, but this team kept it close with some of the league’s elite teams. They took the Ravens to OT and only lost because of a missed FG. Their game with the Chiefs went down to the wire. The Bengals are a good team with a bad record, and the Eagles blew them out. A 20-point win.
Maybe those early struggles were them missing AJ Brown, and then later missing Devonta smith and Lane Johnson. Maybe this young defense needed some time to adjust to the league. Maybe the team needed time to learn Moore’s offense and Fangio’s defense. Maybe this team is better than we thought.
5-2, with wins over the Bengals and Packers, looks pretty good. Depending on what happens with the Commanders and Bears, they could be either leading the NFC East or down just .5 a game. There is good reason to be excited about what is happening with the Eagles.
